276 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 2 1 , 1 9 1 0 . SUSSEX v. LEICESTERSHIRE. Played at Brighton on July 14, 15 and 16. Sussex won by ten wickets. On a good fast wicket Sussex batted the whole of Thursday for 289 runs for five .wickets In two hours Vine and Cartwright made 93 for the first wicket and in an hour and a-quarter the latter and Heygate added 79 for the second. Cartwright made 83 out of 172 in 195 minutes by fortunate cricket; he was missed three times, and was decidedly lucky in the slips. At the end of the day Killick carried out his bat for 53, and on Friday took his score to 105 before Shipman bowled him. He made his runs out of 231 in three hours and three-quarters, cut and off-drove well, and hit ten 4’s. When 21 he might have been caught and bowled by Astill, but offered no other chance in making his first hundred of the season. His best partner was Chaplin, who, twice missed, helped to put on GO for the eighth wicket. Leicestershire, far from approaching their opponents’ large total, were got rid of in 1G5 minutes for 176, their last eight wickets going down for 100. Robert Relf bowled with such effect at one period of the innings that in the course of six overs he took four wickets for 8 runs. Following-on, 228 behind, Leicestershire lost Knight, Turner and Crawford for 33, and at the end of the day still required 157 to save the innings defeat and had seven wickets in hand. On the third day Wood played a very sound game, and was seventh out, at 201, for 88 made in three hours and three-quarters: he made his runs without a chance, and with Sharp put on 71 for the fourth wicket. Cox scored 46 out of 57, and Leicestershire just managed to put Sussex in again. In the second innings of the home side Hazlerigg kept wieket whilst Shields bowled. Score and analysis:— S u ss e x . Yorkshire won by 173 runs. Winning the toss, Yorkshire batted throughout the first day, scoring 362 for six wickets. Hirst, who captained the side, played an innings of 103 out of 156 in 160 minutes without a mistake. He hit fifteen 4’s and made strokes all round the wicket. Rhodes played an unattractive game, batting for 190 minutes for 63; he put on 125 for the fourth wicket with Hirst and hit six 4’s. At the end of the day Myers and Haigh added 101 together with out being parted, the former being 40 not out and the latter 72. On Friday, when Baker kept wicket instead of Smith (injured), the last four wickets fell for 25. The stand for the seventh wicket realised 104, and Haigh hit a 6 and eleven 4’s, mostly drives, in his 72. In the remaining four and a-half hours of the day Warwickshire completed an innings of 319. For their good performance Quaife (W. G.) was largely responsible, seeing that he batted for four hours and scored 124 without a mistake of any kind ; liehitten 4's,and with Fosterputon 104 in 75minutes, with Breeden 45 and with Santall 53. On Saturday seventeen wickets went down for 290runs, and York shire won very comfortably. The home side lost Bates, Rhodes and Booth for 30, but Turner helped Hirst to add 70 and the latter, for the second time in the game, was the highest scorer for his side; he obtained hiu S8 in 110 minutes, hit a 6 and ten 4’s and with Myers put on 80 in 50 minutes. Warwick shire were set 266 to win in three hours. They gave a deplorable display, and were all out for 93. Score and analysis:— Y orkshire . First innings.
