Cricket 1910

2 7 4 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y 2 1 , 1 9 1 0 . scored 1,219 runs and headed the averages of the whole country with 60-95—figures which were six ahead of C. B. Fry's and twelve in advance of Abel’s. It was during that summer that he made a remarkable series of not-out scores, for in successive innings he made 60 not out v. Derbyshire, 117 not out v. Hampshire, 157 not out and 24 not out v. Yorkshire, and 52 not out and 61 not out v. Essex. All these scores, with the exception of the first, which was made at Derby, were compiled on the Edgbaston ground. During his career he has made four scores of over 200 in first-class cricket, and eight others of over 150, his highest effort being 255 not out at the expense of Surrey at the Oval in 1905. In 1897 he took part in the Gentlemen v. Players match for the first time, and in the autumn of 1901-2 went out to Aus tralia as a member of A. C. MaeLaren’s team. Meanwhile he had appeared twice for England against Australia in this country, taking part in the matches at Leeds and Manchester in 1899. In the former game he showed superb defence on a difficult wicket for an hour and three-quarters in scoring 20, the bowlers opposed to him being Trumble, Noble, Howell, Jones and Laver.
