Cricket 1910
J u l y 14, 1910. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 269 SUSSEX y. GLAMORGAN. Played at Brighton on July 11, 12 and 13. Sussex won by 89 runs. With Heygate and Butt away, Sussex were not ftt full strength, but they put a very good side into the field. Winning the toss, they lost their first six wickets for 73 runs in less than two hours, but, making a fine recovery, scored 315. Cox batted very well for two hours and a-half and hit a 0 and ten 4’s, whilst Leach scored 42 in 50 minutes and Vincett 58 in 50. Chaplin and Cox put on 70 runs for the seventh wicket in just over an hour. Before the close Glamorgan lost Creber for 9 runs. On the second day Glamorgan totalled 126, after the fifth wicket had fallen at 34. Sussex decided to go in again in preference to making their visitors follow- on. Against Hacker, who took three wickets in seven balls without a run, half the side were out for 28, but Vine and Cox prevented a collapse by adding 133 together in 90 minutes, and upon the latter’s dismissal the innings was declared closed, leaving Glamorgan with a very heavy task. Cox again played a fine innings, and made his aggregate for the match 172. He hit six 4’s in making 80. In the last 55 minutes of the day Glamorgan scored 33 for the loss of Sweet-Escott, and yesterday played so good a game that Sussex won by only 89 runs. The feature of the play was the batting of Norman Riches, who scored 152 in just over four hours. He batted brilliantly, his driving being especially good, and hit eighteen 4's. Whittington helped to add 67 in 50 minutes, and with Morris 120 were put on for the sixth wicket in 85 minutes. After the latter left wickets fell fast, leaving Sussex successful by the margin stated. Score and analysis:— S u ss e x . First innings. ................ * ’ b .. 13 .. 14 .. 1 24 K. O. DERBYSHIRE. Played at Leicester on July 11, 12 and 13. Derbyshire won by 42 runs. Everything was put into the shade on the first day of this match by the brilliant batting of Needham, who, going in first, made 159 out of 302 in four hours and three quarters. He hit twenty-two 4’s and six 3’s, and offered only one chance—when 141 : the majority of his runs were made on the on-side. With Morton he scored 65 runs, with Newton 63, and with Warren 68. Oliver hit freely for 45 not out at the end of the day, among his strokes being two 6’s. On Tuesday Oliver, who is left-handed, took his score to 104 not out and then the innings was declared closed with eight wickets down for 464. lie made his runs in 105 minutes, gave only one difficult chance—when 14—and hit three 6’s and nine 4’s. Leicestershire commenced their up-hill task well, for Wood and Knight, who opened the innings, made 83 together for the first w'icket in 90 minutes. When Sharp was bowled four men were out for 118, but following his dismissal Turner and Coe put on 81 for the fifth wicket and the latter and Jayes 80 for the sixth. Coe made his runs by grand cricket in 100 minutes and hit fifteen 4’s. At the end of the day seven wickets were down for 314. Yesterday the innings closed for 326, and Derbyshire, going in the second time with a lead of 138, made a bad start, losing Cadman, Morton, Warren and Chapman for 51 runs in 45 minutes. Jayes and Astill bowled unchanged throughout the innings, and the home side were left with 276 to get in three hours and a-half Wood and Knight started well, and in 45 minutes made 53 before the former was caught at the wicket. Knight played a sound and valuable game, but was caught when he appeared set for his hundred. The cricket which followed his dismissal was very keen, but Derbyshire pulled through by 42 runs, thereby gaining their second success during the season. Score and analysis :— D e r b y s h ir e .
