CR ICK ET : A WEEKLY RECORD O f THE GAME. 2 4 9 fact that since going to Accrington he had not enjoyed his usual health, and had concluded that the Northern climate was not beneficial to him. T he Prime Minister has appointed Mr. Maurice Bonham-Carter to be one of his private secretaries. Mr. Bonham- Carter played for Winchester in 1898 and 1899, for Oxford against Cambridge in 1902, and for Kent v. M.C.C. and Ground at Lord’s in 1902. He was a good wicket keeper, a fair change bowler, and a useful batsman, though rather unsteady at starting. He was born in Paddington on October 11th, 1880, and is one of eleven brothers who survived infancy. Two of his brothers were successful cricketers, Ship Hotel, Brighton, on Friday, September 20th, 1839, the following toast was submitted: — The Memory of William IV., the generous sup porter of the Noblfe Game, who kindly condescended to become a Subscriber to a Fund for the Promotion of this manly Sport. The chairman, Benjamin Aislabie, took occasion to remark how sanguine were the hopes which might be entertained that Her Gracious Majesty would follow in the steps of her Royal Uncle, our late amiable, kind-hearted King.” “ T h e sheet anchor o f county cricket,” remarks the Observer, “ is the stringent observance of the qualification rule. Any relaxation o f this will send county play ing 20 and 90—in each innings he made his runs at a time when they were needed —he took ten wickets for 107 runs, and shared the honours of the match with Lawton. Several times he has scored 90 or more in a first-class match, but he has yet to obtain his first hundred. Strictly speaking, he should have been credited with 101 not out, instead of 99 not out, against Worcestershire at Leicester eight years ago, for one of his hits which counted four caused the ball to be lost, and should therefore have yielded him six. A t St. James-the-Less Church, Beth nal Green, on Saturday afternoon last, was celebrated the wedding of the Bev. H . and Philip Norman, and Mr. Herman married a daughter of Mr. W . H . Wathen, who played in his time for Kent. A v a l u e d correspondent sends me a report of a meeting of the Sussex County C.C. held in Brighton seventy-one years ago. As, so far as I am aware, the account has never before been reproduced in a cricket publication, it should prove of interest to followers of the game :— “ At a meeting of the S.C.C.C. held at the Old headlong down the slope to the mire of Football League principles. Cricketers, however distinguished, must be. content to remain outside the pale of the counties until they are properly qualified. The M.C.C. Committee rigidly insists on the observation of the letter and of the spirit of this rule. And so the adoption of any registration scheme is as far off realisation as 1a thaw in Zembla.’ ” O n his comparatively rare appearances in first-class cricket B. T. Crawford has done some very good things with both bat and ball, but in last week’s match against Oxford at Eastbourne he did better than on any previous occasion. Among the presents was a canteen of silver from the Essex County C.C. T o a Cricket reader in Shanghai I am indebted for the score of a match played last month between the Shanghai C.C. and Shanghai Becreation C.C. A close game was seen, and my correspondent states that “ On the 1st and 2nd of July a two-day’s match will be played between
