J u l y 7 , 1 9 1 0 . CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 245 MIDDLESEX v. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. DERBYSHIRE v. LEICESTERSHIRE. Played at Lord’s on June 30, July 1 and 2. Drawn. Thursday’s play was much interfered with by rain, cricket being limited to three hours and three- quarters. In that time the home side made 191 for nine wickets, but except for the play of Tarrant and More the cricket was almost featureless. Warner helped to give the side a splendid start, batting 05 minutes for 39 and helping to make 97 for the first wicket, but the total was only 99 when the fourth wicket fell. Seven men were out for 132, but Anson and More by adding 58 in an hour redeemed some of the failures. In order that P. Pearson-Gregory might receive a trial for Notts, George Gunn was left out of the side. Torrential rain during Friday morning prevented a ball being bowled on the second day, the decision that no cricket would be possible being come to at a quarter past three. On Saturday there were more showers, and just after two o’clock it was decided that further play was out of the question. Score and analysis:— M id d l e s e x . P. F. WEEK-END CRICKET. Derbyshire won by six wickets. Only an hour’s play was possible in this match on Saturday, during which time the visitors, by un eventful cricket, made 60 for four wickets, Wood being not out 20. On Monday, Derbyshire were seen to greater advantage than their opponents on the soft wicket, and at the end of the day seemed likely to pull off their first win of the season. Owing to neuralgia, Humphries could not play after the first day : his position at tho wicket was taken in the first innings by Needham and in the second by Beet of Somercotes, who had taken no previous part in tho game. The Leicestershire iuuings closed for 116, the last few wickets falling very quickly before Forrester, who dismissed four men at a cost of a single. Wood, missed when 34, carried his bat through the innings for 38. In three hours and ten minutes Derbyshire scored 178, thus obtaining a lead of 62, notwithstanding that Humphries was unable to bat. There were several useful contribu tions, and the longest stand was 41 by Newton and Lowe for the ninth wicket. In their second innings Leicestershire lost four good men for 65 in 80 minutes, play then ending for the day. On the third morning the iunings elosed for 118, leaving Derbyshire with 57 to win - a number they obtained for the loss of four wickets. This was the County’s first win during the season. The ground had been so saturated by heavy rain that not a ball could be bowled on Thursday. It was not until one o’clock on the second day that the game could be commenced, but so much pro gress was then made that before stumps were drawn fifteen wickets went down for 200 runs. In less than three hours Somerset were dismissed for 136, only Hardy playing with any confidence. Hamp shire started disastrously, losing Mead, Llewellyn and Greig for 15, but although Bowell and Johnston added 41 half the side were out for 64 by the end of the day. The remaining wickets wrought a great improvement on the third day, the total being taken to 24S before the innings closed. Johnston made his runs without a chance in 110 minutes : he aud Brown added 66 together and Remnant and Kennedy 67 for the last wicket in 40 minutes. With 113 required to save the innings defeat, Somer set lost Lewis and Herbert for 21 in 40 minutes. Hardy, however, played steadily, but received very poor support, and could not save the innings defeat. Score and analysis :— S o m e r se t . First innings. Second innings. Hon. M.
