J une 30, igto. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 231 WARWICKSHIRE v. YORKSHIRE. Played at Edgbaston on June 23, 24 and 25. Drawn. Commenced on a hard, true wickct, the match on the first day was interrupted by a thunderstorm from 1.40 p.m. until a-quarter to five, and was then continued under very different conditions. Thanks chiefly to Field, Warwickshire got rid of their opponents in two hours and a-half for 125. Only Rhodes, who played steadily for an hour, made more than 16, and the last six wickets went down for 37. In the last ten minutes of the day Warwickshire scored 3 without loss, and on the second day were completely outplayed on a rain-damaged wicket. When the game was resumed—not until half-past three—on a drying pitch Booth, of Pudsey, bowled most successfully. He played twice for the County in 1908, and is rather fast. Kinneir was in 70 minutes for 17 and Lilley helped him to put on 22. Only Field of the other players reached double figures, and the innings closed for 65. At one period five wickets went down for 7 runs. Yorkshire, with a lead of 60, made 74 for four wickets by the end of the day in their second innings, thanks chiefly to Denton, who played fine cricket for 4f>. On Saturday Hirst and Myers added 37 in 40 minutes when rain stopped play until a-quarter past three. The score was afterwards taken to 137, when the innings was declared, leaving Warwickshire 198 to win—a very difficult task as the wicket was. When 51 had been made for two wickets bad light and rain caused the game to bp abandoned. Score and analysis Y orkshire . First innings. No play was possible on Saturday owing to rain, but on Monday 454 runs were made for 16 wickets, the visitors declaring with nine men out for 300 and Derbyshire making 154 for seven wickets. The out standing feature of the play was the stand of 138 for the fourth wicket by Smith and Thompson ; each batted for a couple of hours, and the former hit a dozen 4’s and the latter nine. The Derbyshire batting was very unequal, but owing to Needham and Cadman putting on 61 for the third wicket the hundred went up with only three men out. There was rain during the night, but it did not appear to have affected the wicket to any great extent. Morton and Jelf remained together until their stand had realised 47, and, Humphries and Grainger adding 19 for the last wicket, the total reached 222. Going in again, Northants made 157 for nine wickets and then, for the second time in the game, declared. Vials played asound innings, and alone made as many as 20. Derbyshire, set 236 to win, played in dis appointing fashion on a wicket which was not difficult and in a couple of hours were all out for 105. Thompson bowled splendidly and made his record for the match twelve wickets for 122. Score and analysis :— N orthamptonshire . First innings. Second Innings. C. J. T.
