Cricket 1910
230 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 30, 1910. HAMPSHIRE y. MIDDLESEX. Played at Portsmouth on June 23, 24 and 23. Middlesex won by 118 runs. There was a full day’s cricket on the first day of this match, the weather being in marked contrast to that experienced on the majority of other grounds. The feature of the play was the batting of Littel john, who made his first hundred for his county. He had much to do with Middlesex scoring as many as 367, for, despite Hendren’s contribution of 40, their sixth wicket fell at 128. He made his 129 in -A-rri'iig finely c . , ’.o ])ad .settled down and hitting seventeen 4’s. With the Hon. fa Anson, who played patient cricket, US were put on in rnic^i. quarters of an hour for the seventh wicket and with Murrell 61 in 45 minutes. Litteljohn scored 91 of the 118 obtained during his stand with Anson, and offered only once chance whilst in—when 11 to Llewellyn, who had the sun in his eyes. At the end of the day Hampshire ma.de 41 without loss, Mead and Stone in. On Friday the former was soon out, and when the seventh wicket fell at 162 a follow-on appeared to be in store. Brown, how ever, was at his best and played a really great innings. Sprot made 25 in seven hits, but Kennedy kept up his wicket so successfully that the last partnership put on 97 in an hour and a-half. Brown made his firRt hundred in important cricket, and, without giving a chance, made sixteen 4’s during the 110 minutes he was in. In the last hour of the day Middlesex made 47 for the loss of Warner, and, when the game was resumed on Saturday on a wicket which helped the bowlers considerably, lost their last nine wickets for 92 runs in 70 minutes against Llewellyn and Newman. Hampshire were left with 193 to make on a difficult wicket, and never appeared lkely to obtain the runs. Tarrant, making the most of the state of the ground, took seven wickets for 42, and Middlesex won by US runs. Score and analysis :— M iddlesex . First innings. P. F. Played at Worcester on Jttne 24 and 25. Drawn. Rain prevented a start being, made until after 4 o’clock on the first day, and then a fresh wicket had to be prepared. On a sporting pitch Somerset made 151 for nine wickets by the end of the day, after Robsun had been dismissed without a run and Hardy at 25 and Braund at 43. Lewis forced the game finely and Poyntz helped him to add 58 in 45 minutes for the sixth wicket. Not a ball could be bowled on Friday until three o’clock, and then the visitors’ innings was quickly finished. The pitch helped the attack to some extent, but, this notwithstanding, WorcR8tershire made 242 for six wickets before stumps were drawn. Arnold played a remarkably good innings of 109, giving no chance and hitting ten 4’s during the 160 minutes he was in. ith.Bowley he put on 58 and with Burns 92 in 70 minutes. -s*4-nrdav the four outstanding wickets went down for 37, and when o^n^.crset had made 96 for five wickets in their second innings rain caused the match to be abandoned. Bisgood batted 75 minutes for 52 and hit eight 4’s. Score and analysis:— S om erset . First innings. Second innings.
