Cricket 1910
228 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u n e 30, 1910. KENT v. SURKEY. Played at Blackheath 011 June 23, 24 and 25. HAT-TKICK BY BLYTHE. Drawn. Owing to rain and thunder showers, Thursday’s play was limited to just over two hours, during which time Surrey, who won the toss, scored 105 for eight wickets. Only two players—Hayward (42) and Hobbs (43 not out)-reached double-figures, and they put on 62 in 55 minutes. The former, however, might have been caught when 30, 37 and 41 and Hobbs when 8. Blythe made the most of the wicket, and at one period got rid of five men in ten balls without a run. With the first and last balls of a maiden over he dismissed Hayward and Ducat, and with the second, third and fourth balls of his succeeding over got rid of Strudwick, Abel and Smith, thus doing the hat-trick and taking four wickets in five balls. On the second day the game was again greatly interfered with by the weather, only half-an-hour’s play being possible before half past three. The match was afterwards continued in pleasant weather before a crowd of 6,000. The two remaining Surrey wickets added 28 runs, the total thus reaching 133. Hobbs batted 115 minutes for 55—an excellent innings—and hit seven 4’s. Considering the state of the wicket, the Surrey bowlers did not meet with so much success as was anticipated, being able to do little but keep the home batsmen on the defensive. Humphreys and Dillon made 37 for the first wicket in 45 minutes, and the latter and Seymour 90 for the second in 95. Dillon, missed when 24 by Hobbs at cover-point, made 65 out of 127 in 140 minutes, hitting a 6 and four 4’s. Seymour also batted admirably, and at the end of the day Kent, with seven wickets in hand, were one run ahead. Very heavy rain on Saturday caused the match to be abandoned without another ball being bowled. Score and analysis :— S urrey . Abel (W. Thunderstorms and bad light combined to restrict Thursday’s play to two hours and a-half, during which time Essex, going in first, made only 94 runs for four wickets. So tedious was the play that in the hour and three-quarters before lunch only 54 were obtained for the loss of Fane and Gillingham. Douglas, first in, made 31 out of 77 in 130 minutes : he scored only 9 during the first hour he was in, and with Perrin added 57 in 85 minutes. McGahey was caught at 93, and at the end of the day Perrin was not out 41 - made in an hour and three-quarters. On Friday rain prevented play before one o’clock and between half-past two and four. Essex batted two hours longer for 86 runs, taking, therefore, four hours and a-lialf to make 180. Perrin made some fine strokes in scoring 95 out of 160 in three hours and three-quarters, and although nine 4’s were included in his score he played very slow cricket. A L. Gibson helped to add 38 in 40 minutes, and during the afternoon Dean took five wickets for 29. Brighter play was seen when Lancashire went in, Hartley and Spooner making 70 together in less than an hour without being separated, though they should have been parted at 24, Spooner, then 15, being missed at slip by Gillingham. Rain on Saturday caused the match to be abandoned after one over had been bowled and three singles made. Score and analysis:— E ssex . F. L. Fane, b Dean ... 10 J. W. H. T.
