Cricket 1910

222 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 23, 1910. SUSSEX y. CAMBEIDGE UNIVERSITY, riayed at Chichester on June 20, 21 and 22. Sussex won by 42 runs. In this, the first of their out-matches, Cambridge gave a trial to Adams, a fast bowler, in place of Cowie, but the latter is expected to play at Lord’s to-day against the M.C.C. Sussex won the toss, and as several of the players changed at the wrong junction and arrived late an unusual batting order had to be resorted to. In three hours and three- quarters the County made 248, but both Leach and Chaplin, who put on 78 together in less than an hour, were let off. Each batted 90 minutes, and the former hit eleven 4’s and the latter ten. Adams bowled very well on an easy pitch, taking six wickets for 86 runs. The University scored 29 for the loss of Nason aud Tufnell in the last 40 minutes of the day. On the second day Ireland quickly settled down to a free game and, finding a useful partner in Falcon, 87 runs were added in 55 minutes. Ireland hit a 6 and five 4’s during the 80 minutes he was in. Collins also showed good form and Hughes, batting freely, reached 50 in 50 minutes and hit nine 4’s in making 65 in an hour and a-half. In their second innings Sussex did badly, losing the Relfs, Leach and Ramsbotham for 23. Killick and Heygate took the total to 62, and, after Cox had scored a valuable 32, Vincett and Vine put on 32 in the last 20 minutes. At the end of the day, when nine wickets were down for 151, Vine carried out his bat for 26. On Wednesday 30 more runs were added before the innings closed for 181, Street then being bowled. Vine, first in, was unbeaten to the end, with 55 to his credit, made in 75 minutes. The University’s task of making 158 to win was not a heavy one, but by the time 22 had been scored Nason, Tufnell and Ireland were all out. No one except Falcon, who made 27, could with stand Cox and Relf (A. E.) and Sussex pulled off the game by 42 runs. Kidd batted for 35 minutes and was then out without a run.
