Cricket 1910
206 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME J une i 6, 1910. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE v. LEICESTER SHIRE. Played at Nottingham ou June 13,14 and 15. Nottinghamshire won by eight wickets. Fresh from their win over Kent, Leicestershire journeyed to Trent Bridge and had rather the best of the first day’s play, scoring 226 and getting six Notts wickets down for 141. For their total they were indebted to a very great extent to Knight and Whitehead, who, coming together when Wood had been bowled without a run, put on 89 in 70 minutes for the second partnership. Whitehead, who made 50 of the number, batted in attractive style and hit a 6 and five 4’s. Knight, seventh out at 205, scored 114 in three hours, his most remunerative strokes being a 6, a 5 and a dozen 4’s : he cut and off-drove well, and offered no chance. Notts lost their first four wickets for 63, and although John Gunn and Payton added 51 in 55 minutes, the side were 85 behind with only four wickets in hand when play ceased for the day. On the second day, thanks chiefly to Alletson, Notts gained a lead of 23. The player named made 53 in an hour and hit a six and seven 4’s ; his stand with Oates put on 60 runs in 40 minutes. Wass and Riley also reached double-figures, and when the innings closed the former took out his bat for 29. Going in again, Leicestershire, after a very fair start, lost their sixth wicket at 151, but Crawford subsequently hit hard and successfully, and of the last 154 runs made by the side scored 95 in 100 minutes ; he hit fifteen 4’s in his admirable and vigorous display, and showed fine judgment. He and Shields put on 48 for the last wicket, of which his own share was 44 : the rest were byes. Of the 271 runs required for victory, Notts made 16 without loss before stumps were drawn. On the third day Jones was caught at slip at 36, but Iremonger added 99 with Gunn (G.) and 139 without further loss with Hardstaff, Notts winning by eight wickets. Ire monger showed a very welcome return to form and carried out his bat for 107. It was a most service able innings, but he should have been caught when 64.
