Cricket 1910

J une 16, 1910. CR ICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 197 NORTHAMPTONSHIRE v. WARWICK SHIRE. Flayed at Northampton on June 9,10 and 11. Northamptonshire won by six wickets. As the result of some rather uneventful cricket 011 Thursday the home side gained a distinct advantage, scoring 155 for five wickets in reply to a total of 163 with Smith 65 not out. Warwick shire lost their first three wickets for 13 runs, after which Cowan, making his first appearance for the side, scored 34 of the next 45 runs. Foster batted steadily for 16 and Santall made a useful 25, but no one else gave much trouble. Northants com menced their innings in a poor light, and lost three wickets for 59. Smith, however, played brilliantly and with Thompson put on 56 and with Vials 40. On the second morning the last five wickets went down for 29, the lead gained being only 21. Smith batted without a mistake for 110 minutes and hit a dozen 4’s. The second innings of the visitors was marked by a good display on the part of Charles- worth, who received such poor support, however, that Northants were set oidy 119 to win. The innings calls for no description. In the last 85 minutes of the day the home side scored 84 for three wickcts, and on the following day obtained the balance of the runs for the loss of Smith. Sussex won by 138 runs. The opening day’s play in this match was interest ing and even, the University scoring 157 for six wickets after Sussex had been dismissed for 187. For getting rid of the county for such a total, Cambridge owed much to the fast bowling of Cowie, who took the first five wickets for 29 runs. After seven men had been dismissed for 89, Leach helped Chaplin to add 58, but he was missed at square-leg by Mann when only 3. Cambridge had two wickets down for 9 and three for 40, but Ireland and Falcon put on 76 in an hour and Mann and Susskind 35. Ireland made his 60 without a mistake of any kind and hit ten 4’s. A good innings on the part of Collins and a useful 24 by Lockhart enabled the University to obtain a lead of 78 on the innings, but the County afterwards did so well that by the end of the day they had made 201 for the loss of only three wickets. Vine and Robert Relf laid the foundation of the good score by making 90 for the first wicket, and Killick and Cox subsequently made runs freely on a wicket rendered easy by rain which delayed the game tor a couple of hours. On the third morning the last seven wickets added 149, thanks chiefly to Cox and Relf (A. E.) who put on 70 for the fourth wicket and to Chaplin and Leaih who added 73 for the ninth. Cox batted two hours and a half for his 52, and Relf made five 4’s in his 48. The University were set 273 to win. A fair start was made, the total being up to 55 ere the second wicket fell. Kidd batted admirably for 80 minutes and hit six 4’s, but received poor support. Collins, however, made 27, and carried out his b a t: with Lockhart 31 were added for the ninth wicket, but the side were all out for 134. Score and analysis :— S u sse x . First injiings.
