Cricket 1910

196 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 16,1910. LEICESTERSHIRE v. KENT. Played at Leicester on June 9, 10 and 11. Leicestershire won by 111 runs. The home side had every reason to be satisfied with what they did on Thursday, seeing that in four hours and three-quarters they scored 257 and in the last 30 minutes of the day got down the wickets of Dillon, Hutchings and Fairservice for 13 runs. Wood’s defensive innings at the start of the game was valuable, though when he was out, after batting for 125 minutes, half the side were out for 90. Coe, however, carried off the honours of the day with a faultless innings of 77 which included nine 4’s, chiefly off-drives and well-timed cuts. Crawford, though scoring 37 out of 60 in 50 minutes, was not at his best. Astill and Shields caused some surprise and no little enthusiasm by adding 46 for the last wicket in 50 minutes. Kent, as stated, quickly met with three disasters before play ended for the day. A plucky stand of 60 by Huish and Humphreys improved matters on the following morning, but after they had been parted the bowlers gained the upper hand and the score was only 120 when the eighth wicket fell. Then Hubble and Blythe put on 56 together and the latter and Fielder 36, but Kent were 45 behind when the innings closed. Going in again, Leicestershire made 152 for four wickets by the end of the day, being then 197 runs ahead with six wickets in hand. After Knight had been got rid of at 15, Wood and Whitehead added 98 together in two hours, each reaching the half-century. For a time on the third morning the bowlers met with success, three wickets going down for 30 runs. Astill and Shipman, however, added 51 for the ninth wicket in 35 minutes, and Kent were left with 291 to win—a heavy task—and four hours and a-quarter in which to bat. At 27 Humphreys was very finely caught at slip, but following his departure Dillon and Seymour put on 50 together in 45 minutes. After the latter’s departure Dillon and Hutchings added a further 4(1, the former batting altogether for an hour and three-quarters for 56. Against Shipman and Astill the last six wickets went down for 30 runs, the last five adding only 18 : three fell at 178, and the innings closed a run later. Score and analysis:— Leicestershire. Played at Derby on June 9 and 10. Surrey won by ten wickets. M. C. Bird, winning the toss for Surrey, put the home side in as the wicket had not recovered from previous heavy rain, and that he was thoroughly justified in his course of action is apparent from the fact that, after Derbyshire had been got rid of for 122, the visitors made 210 for the loss of only four wickets. Smith was well suited by the state of the pitch and took seven wickets during the innings for 36 runs, the only players to reach double-figures being Cadman and Chapman, who put on 61 to gether in an hour after four wickets had fallen for 30 runs. The former played an excellent game, but by far the finest cricket of the day was shown by Hobbs, who carried out his bat for 124, made without a mis take. Driving was a feature of his display, but he also made some good strokes to leg and with Bush added 82 in 50 minutes. On Friday Abel was bowled after the fifth wicket had increased the score by 62 in 40 minutes, and at 237 Hobbs’ fine innings was brought to a close. The latter made his runs without a chance and hit thirteen 4’s. The last six wickets fell for 51 runs, the innings closing for 261. Going in the second time, Derbyshire were given a good start by Newton and Needham, who took the score to 79, but after they had been parted the side collapsed. The last six wickets fell for 23, and Surrey won easily by ten wickets. Score and analysis :— D erbyshire . First innings.
