1 8 8 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une g, i g t o SAM APTED. [Every cricketer knows that Apted is to have the Surrey v. Kent match for his benefit, and that since he has been in charge of the ground at the Oval the wickets have improved out 01 all knowledge.] Under the blazing summer sky The busy Apted stands ; In truth, a mighty man is he, With hose-pipe in his hands, And the minions waiting on him pay Good heed to his commands. Week iu, week out, from morn till night, At the turf he has a go ; You can see him walking round the pitch, With measured tread and slow, Like a farmer walking round his fields To watch his turnips grow. And postmen coming home from work Drop in at the Oval door ; They love to see Tom Hayward smack The ball along the floor, And think that they themselves could hit, On such a ground, a four. He goes on Sunday to the church— At least, I hope he does— He hears the parson pray and preach, And dreams that with his hose He’s freshened up the village choir ; And off to sleep he goes. * Toiling—rejoicing—sorrowing, Apted’s at work all day ; Each morning sees him roll the pitch, Each eve he goes away ; Sometimes disgusted, sometimes pleased, According to the play. Thank*, thanks to thee, our worthy friend, For the wickets thou hast wrought! Thus on thy pliant oval field No batsman need make nought; Thus when they speak of other grounds Men praise thine as they ought. W. A. B ettesworth . * The Editor does not hold himself responsible for the base assertions of his spring poets. BRIGHTON COLLEGE v. HAMPSHIRE. Played at the Oval on June 6, 7 and 8. Surrey won by 83 runs. With Hayward and Hobbs back again, Surrey were able to put a stronger side in the field than for some time previous, but, although they won the toss, it cannot be said that the side made much use of their opportunity. Bayward, however, played a very fine game and scored his 74 out of 138 in two hours : with Hobbs he made 43 for the first wicket and with Hayes 51 for the second. After he left, the remaining eight wickets went down for 72 against Newman and Llewellyn, the iunings closing for 210. In about a couple of hours at the close of the day Hampshire made 119 for the loss of four wickets, Mead, who went in first, carrying out his bat for 47 of the number. Llewellyn hit finely and claimed 31 of the 44 put on in half-an-hour for the third wicket. A heavy thunderstorm prevented the game being continued on Tuesday until half-past three. Brown was soon out, having put on 38 with Mead. Eleven la ter-a t 145—Mead was bowled after batting very carefully for two hours and a-half. Sprot failed and, with the remaining batsmen doing little, Surrey were left with a lead of 25 on the innings. Knox bowled very well indeed on the soft wicket, and in the innings took five wickets for twelve and a-half runs each. Tile light was poor when the home side went in again, and scoring was no easy matter. Hobbs left at 14 and Hayward had made only 13 when he was caught in the long-field. Harrison also was dismissed before play ceased, and at the end of the day three good wickets were down for 55. Yesterday several of the remaining players got into double figures, but only Hayes, who hit seven 4’s during the 55 minutes he was in, exceeded 20. During the innings Stone dismissed three men and allowed only 2 byes. Hampshire were left 196 to make, and as about four and a-half hours remained a definite result was assured. Both Smith and Knox were in good form, the former especially, and the score was only 13 when the third wicket fell. Greig and Johnston then added 39, but the result was never in doubt. During the innings Smith took six wickets for less than six runs cach.
