J un e 2, 1 9 1 0 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J73 SUSSEX y. NOTTINGHAMSHIRE. Played at Brighton on May 30, 31 and June 1. Sussex won by 78 runs. Although the conditions favoured the batsmen, eighteen wickets fell in this match on Monday for 304 runs, Notts, when play ceased, being 52 runs behind with two wickets in hand. Owing to a strain, Wass was unable to play. Sussex lost Robert Relf to the first ball bowled, and the total was only 33 when the fourth wicket fell. Cox, fortunately, was in good form, and with Relf (A. E.) put 011 75 for the fifth wicket and with Chaplin 46 for the sixth. He batted for 125 minutes for his excellent 65 and hit six 4’s, the majority of them square and late cuts. Riley took the last three wickets in four balls, and the innings closed for 178. Notts also found run-getting no easy matter, and at the end of an hour had six wickets down for 49. Alletson then hit freely and well, and at the end of the day carried out his bat for 64. With Payton he added 46 runs for the seventh wicket at a critical time. O 11 the second day rain restricted play to three hours and a-half, but Sussex did so well during that limited time that at the end of the day they were 191 runs on with nine wickets in hand. Alletson added only 6 runs to his over-night score, but Hallam and Riley added 37 in half-an-hour for the last wicket, the consequence being that Notts were only 6 runs behind on the innings. The elder Relf took seven wickets for 81 runs, and deserved his figures. When Sussex went in again the younger Relf was seen at his best for the first time this season. Playing a vigorous game, he scored 101 of the 158 runs scored with Vine for the first wicket in 125 minutes. He gave no chance, and hit a (5and thirteen 4’s. At the end of the day Vine was 68 not out. On the third morning Vine left as soon as the second hundred was reached, having batted for 165 minutes for 74— a steady and most valuable innings. Leach made 21, but of the later batsmen only Relf (A. E ) met with much success. Five wickets at one period fell for 15 runs, but then Cox defended whilst Relf hit. The latter, having been in an hour, was caught at mid-off, and when Chaplin was out directly after wards the innings was closed, leaving Notts 267 to win. Owing to an injury Butt did not keep wicket, his place being taken by Leach. With such success did Vincett and Rolf (A. E.) bowl that by the time 20 had been scored James, George Gunn, llardstaff and Iremonger were all out. Jones and John Gunn reached double-figures, but only Payton met with any pronounced success until Riley went in, last man, and joined him. The pair made a plucky stand, but defeat could not be avoided. Score and analysis: — S ussex . First innings. Second innings. Relf (R. So fast did runs come on Monday that during the day 557 were made for the loss of eleven wickets in five hours and ten minutes, the County scoring 488 in four hours and a quarter and the University replying with 69 for one wicket in 55 minutes. Everything was dwarfed by the batting of Arnold, who hit vigorously from the start: he made 70 of the first 100 runs in 50 minutes, 100 (out of 157) in 70, 200 in 160, and, in all, scored 215 out of 350 in 175 minutes. With Pearson he made 161 for the first wicket in 70 minutes, and with Burns put on 105 for the third in 50. Hitting so freely, it was not surprising that his innings was not faultless : he was missed by Altham when 28 and by Leese when 48. Hitting brilliantly all-round, he obtained two 6’s and twenty-nine 4’s. H. K. Foster obtained his 126 in an hour and three-quarters, and, except for a hard chance when 83, made no m istake: he hit a 6 and twenty-two 4’s and when he required 16 to reach his hundred made five 4’s off an over from Cartwright. During the long innings Twining, who took Pawson's place at the wicket, did not allow a single bye. The University lost Evans without a run, but Leese and Bardsley took the total to 69 without further loss by the end of the day. Owing to heavy rain no play was possible on Tuesday. Yesterday, with a draw assured, not much interest centred in the match. For a time the game favoured the county, the score at lunch being 189 for six wickets. The association of Twining and Lagden pulled the game round, how ever, resulting in 137 being added for the seventh wicket in an hour. Lagden made 59 of the number and hit two 6’s and four 4’s. Twining, eighth to leave, batted for 135 minutes, playing a most useful game. The innings closed for 375, and when the game was given up the score was as under :— W o r c e s te r s h ir e . WARWICKSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE. Played at Edgbaston on May 30, 31 and June 1. Lancashire won by an innings and 43 runs. The conditions of weather on Monday were very cheerless at Edgbaston and not more than l,f;00 persons watched the plajr. Staying in until just after five o’clock, Warwickshire scored 244. A tone time a larger total seemed in prospect, Kinneir and Lilley making 51 for the first wicket and the score at lunch being 109 with only one man out. After the interval, however, Charlesworth left at 126 and Kinneir at 143. The latter, who might have been caught when 15 and again when 38, batted for 135 minutos and hit five 4’s. Baker played a faultless game for 57, a score which included a dozen 4’s. It should be mentioned that when 84 had been made for the loss of one wicket Huddleston split the nail of his right forefinger so badly that he was obliged to retire from the game. Lancashire lost Hornby at 21, but Hartley and Tyldesley took the score to 100 and were still together when play ceased for the day. Play was limited by rain to 140 minutes on Tuesday, but in that time Lancashire added 168 runs for the loss of three wickets. Hartley and Tyldesley’s stand for the second wicket realised 145, the former then being caught at slip for an admirable innings of 60. Tyldesley, however, carried off the honours of the day, and when stumps were drawn was still not out with 142—his eleventh hundred at Edgbaston—to his credit. When 83 he was almost caught, but he ran no other risk. Makepeace, although making only 22, helped to add 72 for the fourth wicket. On the third day Tyldesley was out after adding 10: he batted for 210 minutes for his admirable innings and hit a dozen 4’s. Whitehead and Dean did little, but MacLaren played a very enterprising game, and when he had reached three-figures the innings was declared. He took only 90 minutes to make his runs, and played a splendid game for his side. War wickshire lost Kinneir at 8 and always appeared to be playing a losing game afterwards. Dean and Whitehead bowled with great effect, the latter’s four wickets costing only five and a-half runs each, and Lancashire won very comfortably. Score aud analysis :— W a r w ic k sh ir e .
