WARWICKSHIRE v. SUSSEX. Played at Leamington on May 23, 24 and 25. Drawn. W inning the toss, Warwickshire batted through out Monday, scoring 421 for seven wickets in five hours and a-half. The ground is smaller than the majority of county enclosures, and, generally, big scores obtained there are flattering. The chief honours were carried off by Lilley, who was making his first appearance of the season. Kinneir helped him to make 118 for the first wicket in 110 minutes, and with Charlesworth 72 were added for the second in an hour. He made his 104 out of 214 in 190 minutes, and hit ten 4’s. During the early part of his innings he was occasionally at fault in timing the ball, but he played very well indeed later, his driving especially being good. He was, however, missed by Leach off his own bowling when 32. Baker and Meldon made useful scores, and Goodwin, missed before making a run, put on 77 for the eighth wicket in three quarters of an hour with Quaife. The last-named batted two hours and three-quarters for 74 not out, and Goodwin carried out his bat for 47. It was remarkable that, although the weather was delightfully fine, only 628 people paid for admission during the day. On Tuesday the total was taken to 517 for nine wickets and then the innings was declared. Goodwin, who hit a 6 and eleven 4’s, claimed 81 of the 120 runs added for the eighth wicket with Quaife in 65 minutes. The last- named carried out his bat for 109, for which he batted without a mistake for just over three hours and a- half: at times he was very slow, but ten 4’s were included in his hits. Sussex mad£ a very poor start, Foster bowling Vine at 6 and the younger Relf at 18. Killick stayed with Heygate whilst 49 were added for the third wicket, but half the side were out for 78. Heygate, however, found a very useful partner 111 Cox, who, defending strongly, helped to add 112 in an hour and a-half for the sixth wicket, although his own score was only 38. Playing a free game and hitting well all round the wicket, Heygate scored 108 out of 193 in 185 minutes without a mistake of any kind : his chief strokes were fifteen 4’s, chiefly drives. Following-on, 266 behind, Sussex made 111 for two wickets by the end of the day, Heygate 38 not out) and Killick (33 not out) adding 72 without being separated. In all the stand for the third wicket realised 81 in 65 minutes, and then, after Heygate had been bowled, the elder Relf and Killick added 58 together in 50 minutes. Killick batted a couple of hours for his most valuable innings, and Relf made his 55 in 80 minutes and hit two consecutive balls from Goodwin out cf the ground for 6. When Cartwright left six men were out for 231, and the position was desperate. Cox left at 260 and when Chaplin was bowled by Santall at 297 Sussex, with only two wickets in hand, were only 31 runs on. Then ensued aplucky and vigorous stand by Leach and Vincett, who put on no less than 126 for the ninth wicket in 50 minutes. So free was the scoring that the former reached 50 in 40 minutes and the latter the same number in half-an-hour. In all, Leach batted for 75 minutes and hit three 6’s and nine 4’s : Vincett was in 25 minutes less and made three 6’s and eight 4’s. Warwickshire were set 158 to win in 95 minutes, and in the time mentioned lost six wickets for 110. During the three days 1,301 runs were made for 35 wickets.
