14 0 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME M ay 1 9, 1 9 1 0 . YORKSHIRE v. LANCASHIRE Played at Leeds on May 16, 17 and 18. Drawn. Some excellent cricket was seen in this match, but on Monday not more than 7,228 persons paid for admission and the total attendance could not have been more than 9,000. There had been rain on Sunday, and as the ball travelled slowly in the out-field and the bowlers were able to get on some spin, run- getting was never an easy matter. During the day thirteen wickets fell for 267 runs, Yorkshire, when play ceased, being 191 runs behind with three wic kets down. Lancashire appeared likely to make a larger score than 229, for at lunch only three men were out for 130, but the sixth wicket fell at 144, and if the seventh had not added 30 and the eighth 35 the total would not have reached two hundred. Hornby and Hartley made 43 runs for the first wicket and the latter and Tyldesley 40 for the third. The last-named played the best cricket of the day, driving and pulling with much skill and putting plenty of power in his strokes : he made his 51 out of 98 in an hour and a-half and hit five 4’s. Dean defied the Yorkshire attack for an hour and a-half. In the last 05 minutes of the day Yorkshire lost three good wickets for 38: a fourth should have fallen also, Rhodes, who carried out his bat for 12, being badly missed at slip by MacLaren when 2. On the following day the home side made 152, thanks largely to a last-wicket stand of 43 by Haigh and Radcliffe. When he bowled Rhodes, Brearley smashed the off-stump. The cricket was steady throughout, and the only fact worthy of remark is that had a catch offered by Radcliffe been held the side would have been out for 109. Going in a second time with a lead of 77, Lancashire found Hirst in his most deadly form and only MacLaren (19) reached double figures. The whole side were dismissed for 61 in 95 minutes, Hirst taking nine wickets (eight of them bowled down) for 23 runs. He can seldom have been in better form, and was practically unplayable : twice during the innings he took two wickets with consecutive balls. Set 139 to win, Yorkshire made 40 runs in the last 50 minutes of the day for the loss of Rhodes and Denton. Yesterday, owing to heavy rain, the match was abandoned without another ball being bowled. Kent won by an innings and 198 runs. Delightful weather was experienced on Monday, and 10,652 persons paid for admission. Owing to a chill, Fielder did not play for Kent, his place being taken by Morfee, a right-hand fast bowler belonging to the Tonbridge nursery who has appeared for Kent 2nd XI. Three Cambridge players—Susskind, Mann and Griffin—were included in the Middlesex side, which took the field without Hearne (J. T.). Kent batted the whole of the first day, scoring 412 for the less of only four wickets. Dillon and Humphreys made 116 for the opening partnership in 95 minutes, the latter, who made some very good off-drives, then being dismissed. Seymour left at 157and Hutchings 30 runs later, but Dillon and Woolley then put on 73 for the fourth wicket in 50 minutes. Dillon made his 115 out of 260 in 220 minutes, and hit well all round the wicket once he had settled down : he obtained sixteen 4’s, but was missed by Murrell at the wicket off Tarrant when only a single. Woolley started rather unsteadily, and was missed by Hendren at slip when 41, but afterwards improved consider ably and scored freely. He and Day put on 152 without being separated in the last hour and three- quarters of the day, the former being 116 not out and the latter 54. On Tuesday things continued to prosper with Kent, who declared their innings closed with eight wickets down for 500. Woolley, with only 4 added, was caught at tho wicket for 120, an attractive innings which contained only one chance and included fourteen 4’s. He batted three hours and a-quarter, helped to put on 156 for the fifth wicket, and cut and off-drove brilliantly. The rest of the innings was marked by some excellent driving and cutting on the part of Day, who made 111 not out in 170 minutes without a mistake. His chief hits were fifteen 4’s, and Kent’s total had been made in less than six hours and a-half. The Middlesex batting was poor in comparison, and the whole side were dismissed for 105 in 130 minutes. Morfee, who was making his first appearance for Kent, bowled Warner with his third delivery and with Blythe was unchanged through the innings. Tarrant made 25, but the best batting was shown by Mann, who scored 37 of the last 56 and carried his b a t: he hit a 6 and two 4’s off Morfee in an over. In the follow-on Warner was bowled by Morfee’s first ball. Hendren hit freely and put on 74 for the second wicket before returning a ball to Fairservice, who also got rid of Litteljohn, Susskind and Mann. At the end of the day, when Tarrant carried his bat for 67, Middlesex had five wickets down for 160. There was some heavy rain yesterday morning which delayed the game being continued until five minutes past twelve. The last five wickets added 37, Tarrant being the sixth out, at 172, after batting 130 minutes for 72—a sound innings. Murrell made a few good hits, and Day made a splendid one-handed catch in the long-field with the sun in his eyes in dismissing Mignon. Score and analysis:— K e n t . E. W. There had been heavy rain on Sunday, and, with the sun shining brilliantly on Monday, bowlers had matters so much to their liking that during tho day twenty-four wickets went down for 269 runs. Surrey seemed to have done very well indeed when they had got rid of Notts before lunch for 69. Jones and Iremonger were out in trying to hit, but the Gunns took the total to 49 before the third wicket fell. Then to such an extent did the attack obtain the upper hand that in 40 minutes the remaining seven wickets went down for 20 runs, Smith taking four of them at a cost of eight singles. Smith bowled well throughout and deserved his analysis, but Lees was unable to keep a good length at the start of the innings. The Surrey men found Wass on a wickct entirely to his liking*and were dismissed for 65 in an hour and a-quarter. Keeping an excellent length and making the ball swing in from leg, Wass took eight wickets for 37 runs, obtaining his last four in three overs for five runs. Hayes, who had a runner (owing to a strained leg), made 28 out of 46 whilst in and saved the side from a complete collapse. The batsmen asserted themselves when Notts went in again, and Jones was seen at his best in scoring 72 out of 104 in 80 minutes. He made his runs freely all round the wicket and hit nine 4’s and four 3’s. With Iremonger, who played a much quieter game, he made 90 for the first wicket in 85 minutes. At the drawing of stumps Notts had made 135 for four wickets, and on the following morning the last six added 84 runs more, leaving Surrey 224 to make on a tricky wicket. Hayward and Hobbs made 29 for the first wicket, but both were out when 30 had been scored and then, with only Bird and Strudwick making any stand, and Hayes unable to bat, the innings was soon over, Wass again bowling with much effect. The last-named had a great deal to do with the success of his side, seeing that ho took fourteen wickets for 91 runs. For Surrey Smith obtained twelve for ten-aud-a half runs each.
