Cricket 1910
M ay i2 , 1910. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. I25 NORTHAMPTONSHIRE v. YORKSHIRE. Played at Northampton on May 9 and 10. Yorkshire won by 145 runs. Unaccustomed as they were to a fast wicket, both sides found themselves at sea on Monday, when twenty-one wickets went down for 2GG runs. Northants appeared to have done very well in dismissing Yorkshire for 104 in less than two hours, but the bowling of Hirst and Newstead proved too much for the home side, and at the end of the day Yorkshire with eight wickets in hand were 144 runs on. In this match Northants were playing for the first time in a Championship game three players who had just completed their residential qualification: they were Ellis, a wicket-keeper, formerly of the Manchester ground staff, John Seymour, of Sussex, a brother of the Kent cricketer, and Haywood, from Eltham, a very promising batsman. Rhodes made 41 out of 71 in 80 minutes by excellent cricket 011 Monday, and Denton and Drake did good service by adding 52 without being parted after the fall of the second wicket at the end of the day. Altogether, the latter added 69 for the third wicket in 40 minutes, before falling to Wells. Denton hit a 6 and seven 4’s during the 80 minutes he was in, but, except Myers and Newstead, who put on 49 for the seventh wicket in 40 minutes, the other did little, and the innings closed for 215. Hirst was out first ball, and obtained “ a pair.” During the morning Wells took six wickets for 44 runs, and made his analysis for the match thirteen for 101. Set 259 to win, Northants never appeared likely to make the runs. They lost Vials at 7, Seymour at 16 and Haywood at 23. Smith made a few good hits iu his 28, but no one else faced the bowling with much confidence, and Yorkshire won by the margin stated. Score and analysis :— Y o r k s h ir e . First innings. Toone, the Yorkshire County C C. haudbook is still the best- compiled and most attractively-produced of all such publications, and hundreds of cricket enthusiasts and book lovers must regret that it is issued only for the members of the County Club. Full scores of all first and second eleven matches played last season by Yorkshire are given, as well as several pages of valuable information of a statistical nature relating to the history of the county’s cricket. It is the model of what such a book should be. _____________________________________ * Yorkshire County.Cricket Annual. 1910. Edited by F. C. Toone. Published by the Yorkshire County C.C.
