Heavy rain prevented a ball from being bowled on the first day, but on the second twenty wickets went down for 311 runs. Bridges, of Christ College, New Zealand, played an excellent innings of 54, which included nine 4’s, and Patterson, of Chel tenham, was seen to advantage in making 58 : the latter added 72 with Boscawen, of Eton, for the ninth wicket at a critical time. Windsor-Clive, the Eton left-hand medium-paced bowler, met with much success, his seven wickets costing only seven runs each. Owing to the death of the King, there was no play on Saturday. The state of the County ground after heavy rain was so bad that a wicket was prepared on the practice-ground, where play commenced at 2.20 on the Thursday. After the Colts had lost eight wickets for 16 runs, Sinfield and Morlcy made a good stand ; the former scored 31 out of 39 whilst in and the latter kept up his wicket for eighty minutes and carried out his bat for 13. Huddleston performed the hat-trick. The County, going in against a total of 74, lost half their wickets for 15, but W. and E. Tyldesley put on 76 together in an hour and when play ceased with eight wickets down for 102 the latter carried out his bat for 38. On Friday the innings closed for 127, and Ernest Tyldesley took his score to 55 and was not o u t; he played a fine game at a critical time and was never in difficulties with the bowling. Frederick Clarence Almond, a former member of tbe Essex County Eleven, died at Enfield on the 3rd inst. in his fifty-fifth year. As a batsman he was above the average and was strong on the off-side, his bowling was slow round armed, and in the field he generally stood point or mid-off. His first appearance at Lord’s was in May, 1880, for XXI Colts of Middlesex (with Mr. P. M. Thornton as captain) v. M.O.C. and Ground. He began to assist Essex in 1883 and in 1886 headed the County’s batting averages with 27*25 for eight innings commenced, his high est score being 84 not out against Derbyshire on the Leyton ground. In 1883 and 1884 he was engaged by the Enfield Club, but in the following season went as cricket coach to Elstree School, in Hertfordshire, where he remained for several years. He wa 3 born at Great Bentley, in Essex, on October 7th, 1855, and was buried at Enfield on Saturday last. He was 5 ft. 5J in. in height, and weighed 9 st. 12 lbs. C. B andon . Charles Bandon, formerly a well-known figure in Leicestershire cricket, died at Hathern on May 2nd in his seventy-first year. He was an elder brother of F. Bandon, the Notts and Leicestershire fast bowler, and was born at Stapleford, in Nottinghamshire, on February 6 th, 1840. In Scores and Biographies (ix-12) he was described as “ An excellent fast bowler, a fair bat and in the field generally in the slips.” He accepted many' engagements, and it was not until 1874 that he made his first appearance for Leices tershire.
