NOTEWORTHY EVENTS OP 1908. (Continued from Vol. 27, page U53.) VI.— M e m o r a b il ia . Surrey v. Gentlemen of Englaud, at the Oval, April ‘20th, 21st and 22nd.—Smith |F. K.) made his first appearance for Surrey since 1898. When play had lasted half-an- hour on the opening day the game was stopped for thirty minutes owing to a fall of snow. Lees (W. S.) made 47 out of 141 in sixty-three minutes for Surrey. In the first innings of the Gentlemen (W. G. Grace and H. D. Keigwin in) the first seven overs, sent down bv Lees and Smith (F. E.), were maiden*; “ W.G.” made only 2 runs during the first hour he was in. In the same innings H. I). G. Leveson-Gower, in trying to stop a powerful drive by V. F. S. Craw­ ford off Lees, fractured the top joint of his thumb. Y. F. S. Crawford made his 91 out of 136 in one hundred minutes. Surrey v. Northamptonshire, at the Oval, May 4th. 5th and 6th. —In the first innings of the latter K. F. Knight at one period batted forty minutes without adding to his score. Leicestershire v. Warwickshire,atLeiccster, May 9tli, 11th find 12th.—This match com­ menced on a Saturday and was continued on the Monday and Tuesday. The experi­ ment was considered a success. Surrey v. Hampshire, at the Oval, May 7th, 8th, and 9t.h. - In the first innings of Hampshire Llewellyn (C.B.) scored 56 out of 80 obtained whilst in. In the second innings of the same side the last five wickets went down for 8 runs in forty minutes. Northamptonshire v. Yorkshire, at North­ ampton, May 7th and 8th.—This was York­ shire’s one thousandth match, but their first v. Northants. (Yorkshire county cricket dates back to 1833.) The home side were dismissed in their first innings for 27 in sixty-five minutes and in their second for 15 in seventy minutes. There was only one boundary—to leg by G. A. T. Vials off Hirst (G. H.)—and no double-figure score in the two Northants innings. Surrey v. Derbyshire, at the Oval, May 11th, 12th, 13th.—In the first innings of the latter Marshal (A.) at one period bowled 13 balls for 0 runs and five wickets. Somerset v. Lancashire, at Bath, May 11th, 12th, 13th.—J. Daniell reappeared for Somerset after an absence of four years. M.C.C. and Ground v. Yorkshire, at Lord’s, May 11th, 12th 13th. —In the second innings of the former P. F. Warner made 64’ out of 95 in two hours and a-quarter. He scored 51 out of 77 in one hundred aud five minutes. Oxford University v. Lancashire, at Oxford, May 14th, 15th, 16th.—In the first innings of the University Harry (F.) sent down eight consecutive maiden overs. Cambridge University v. Yorkshire, at Cambridge, May 14th, 15th, and 16th.—In the first innings of the University R. A. Young (56), during the last hour he was in, was the only player to score. On the third day the wicket was found to be so damaged by rain that a fresh one was prepared and used. Yorkshire v. Kent, at Bradford, May 18th and 19th.—Four of the Kent side were run out—two in each innings. Somerset v. Sussex, at Taunton, May 21st and 22nd.—In the Sussex innings Vine (J.) and Killick (E. H.) added 28 for the second wicket, all made by the latter. Vine batte 1 for thirty-five minutes without adding to his score. In the same innings*0. L. A. Smith, hitting two 6’s aud ten 4’s, made 71 out of 87 in fifty minutes. Lancashire v. Derbyshire, at Manchester, May 21st, 22nd, aud 23rd.—Owing to rain A. E. L iwton (44) and A. Sherwin (9) batted on each of the three days in the first inniDgs of Derbyshire. Yorkshire v. Surrey, at Leeds, May 25th and 26th.—In ths first innings of Surrey Hayes (E. G.) made 58 out of 78 in seventy- five minutes and in the second 24 out of 32 in half-an-hour; in all, therefore, he scored 82 out of 110 in one hundred and five minutes. Somerset v. Warwickshire, at Taunton, May 25th, 26th and 27th.—When Warwick- shiie commenced their innings at the end of the first day rain permitted only one ball to be delivered, the stuinp3 then being drawn with the score 0 for no wicket. (Somerset had previously made 229.) Cambridge University v. Lancashire, at Cambridge, May 25th, 26th and 27th.—F. H. Mugliston scored 56 out of 8L in seventy minutes in the second innings of the University. Middlesex v. Hampshire, at Lord’s, May 25th, 26th and 27th.—Owing to the death of Capt. C. A. R. Hoare, the President of the Hampshire County C.C., the Hampshire players wore black armlets. On the second day, duriug his funeral, the luncheon interval was extended to 3.15 pm . Derbyshire v. Yorkshire, at Chesterfield, May 28th, 29th and 30th.—In the first innings (190) of the latter the last five wickets fell for three runs. In their second innings Wilkinson (W. H.) at one time batted forty minutes without making a run. Northamptonshire v. Lanca hire, at Northampton, May 28th, 29th at.d 30th. —Northants won by one wicket. When Har ly (8*) went in, last man, aud joined Wells, W. (24*), 23 runs were still required, and that number the pair successfully obtained. Hardy, however, was missed off the winning hit. Cambridge University v. M.C.C. and Ground, at Cambridge, May 28tli, 29th and 30th. —In the first innings of the University Tarrant (F. A.) took his last four wickets without a run being made off him. In the second innings of the M.C.C. everyone reached double figures, the lowest score being 10 by Tarrant. Oxford University v. Gentlemen of England, at Oxford, May 28th, 29th and 30th. — H.H. the Jam of Nawanagar (Ranjitsinhji) here ma ’e his first appearance in a match of note since 1904. T. Bowring (228) and H. Teesdale (108) made 338 for the first wicket of Oxford in one hundred and eighty-five minutes ; the former at one perioi of his inning* scored 40 out of 50 in twenty minutes. The University total of 589 was made in three hundred and thirty minutes. Gloucestershire v. Nottinghamshire, at Bristol, May 28th, 29th and 30tli —In the second innings of the former G. L. Je 3 Sop made 106 out of 145 in eighty minutes, scoring his last 56 out of 60 in forty. He hit Haliam for 6, 4, 2, 6 off consecutive balls. Nottinghamshire v. Lancashire, at Not­ tingham, June 1st and 2nd.—In the first innings of the latter A. H. Hornby made 59 out of 74 in sixty-five minutes: he reached 50 out of 60 iu fifty-five. Sussex v.
