46 CR ICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M arch 25, 1909. CRICKET IN NEW ZEALAND.* In a footnote on the opening page of bis History of Otago Representative Cricket Mr. Bannerman informs the reader that “ The first cricket match in New Zealand was played at Russell (Bay of Islands) in 1842. Welling ton, Dunedin and Christchurch followed in order.” Otago was founded in 1818, and in December of the same year the following challenge appeared in the Otago Neics :— “ The cricket players of Dunedin publicly challenge the Cricket Club at Wellington to a trial of skill at any point equidistant between the Port of Otago and Port Nichol son.” As the Wellingtonians did not appreciate the prospect of a match on an unknown and unprepared wicket in an equally unknown wilderness the challenge was not accfpted. On New Year’s Day, 1849, the Dunedin C.C. was founded, but the game (lid not flourish; in fact, for ten years—until 1859, when there was an influx of those afflicted with ihe gold fever—all interest iu cricket ceased. The inrush of Europeans marked the commencement of a period of prosperity, an«t the game became so popular that in 1863-4 a “ Grand Cricket Tourney ” was held in Dunedin in which elevens representing England—Parr’s Team —Otago, Canterbury and Southland took part. We are informed that the expenses must have been quite £3,000. and that the promoter — Mr. Shadrach Jones, hotel keeper — did not lose a penny. Otago’s first important match was against South land, in which, after losing the t ss and being sent in first, they totalled 22*2, which stood as their record score for thirty years. The inter-Provincial games and the matches against visiting sides representative of England, Australia, Tasmania, New South Wales, Fiji, Queensland and the Melbourne C.C. are traced season by season, and, at the end of the volume, which is i lustrate 1, and one which the cricket student will be glad to possess, there are many interesting tables dealing with Otago cricket. To what extent cricket was played in Southland prior to 1860 appears to be a matter for surmise, although it is likely that the Riverton Club was established as early as 1850, since Riverton was the resort of whalers long before Invercargill was thought of. The first match played in the Province took place on the highland two miles or so from Riverton ” on March 7th, 1862, and was drawn, much in the latter’s favour. Mr. Bannerman’s research into the history of Southland cricket covers a longer period than one would gather from the title of his book, inasmuch as the record extends from 1860 to February, 1908. The publication, like that on Otago cricket, is illustrated, and contains some interest’ng statistical matter relative to representative matches. * Early Cricket in Southland. By J. W. H. Banner man. The Civilians made a good start, having over 100 up for the loss of two wickets, but Branston sub sequently proved very successful and the innings closed for 103. The visitors lost their first three wickets for 58 runs, but Wynyard and Ebden made a useful stand and Branston hit freely for 80. Score and analysis:— C iv il ia n s . E. H. The home side gave the visitors a good game, their total of 110 being exceeded by 35 only. The stand for the third wicket of the M.C.C. realised 57 and for the fourth 40. Wynyard and Metcalfe had a great deal to do with the result, scoring between them 98 of the 130 runs made from the bat. Score and analysis:— K h ed ivial S porting C lu b . Rev. J.
