396 CR ICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S e ; p t . g, 1909. THE AUSTRAL IANS . 3 6 t h M a tc h — v. A n E N G L A N D XI. Played at Uttoxeter on September 6, 7 and 8. Drawn. Heavy rain and the soddened state of the ground prevented a ball being bowled before 3.25 on Tuesday afternoon. This was very disappointing, for Mr. John Bamford, upon whose ground the match was to be played, had got a very good side together to oppose the visitors. The pitch had been protected by tarpaulins, but the ground on either side was very heavy. In the 125 minutes during which play was possible, the England team lost eight wickets for 92. When a shower interrupted play for 25 minutes 52 runs were on the board with two men out, but Armstrong and O’Connor afterwards proved very effective, six wickets adding only 40. Iremonger batted an hour and three-quarters for 21, and was fourth out, at 73. He, MacLaren, and Jones were dismissed by O’Connor in one over, MacLaren being out first ball. There was heavy rain again yesterday which prevented the game being continued until a quarter past two. With 17 added Barnes was out, but Buckenham and Blythe put on 31 for the last wicket in ten minutes, taking the total to 140 before the innings closed. O’Connor followed his successat Leyton bytaking six wickets for seven runs each. With adraw assured, interestin the game was naturally not very keen. By uneventful ci’icket the Australians made 110 for seven wickets before stumps were drawn. Score and analysis :— As E n g l a n d XI. A. O. Owing to a heavy storm in the early morning of Monday it was not found possible to commence this match until ten minutes to one, and as there was a delay of 20 minutes in the afternoon owing to a shower play on the opening day was limited to three hours and 40 minutes. The conditions favoured the attack, eleven wickets going down in the time mentioned for 202 runs. The ball was so difficult to get away that in 70 minutes before lunch only 44 runs were made for the loss of Spooner and Day. Fane played very steadily for 22 and was fourth out, at 70. After the fall of the fifth wicket, at 75, Douglas and Schwarz added 50 in 40 minutes, but the others did little and the innings closed for 137. Rhodes, who took four wickets for 17, was not tried until the score was 116 for five, or the total might well have been smaller. When the Players went in 55 minutes remained for play, and the innings was opened by Rhodes and Hobbs, who required 29 and 4*.* runs respectively to complete their 2,000 for the season. The former obtained the number necessary but Hobbs was bowled when 1.s short, and upon his dismissal stumps were drawn with one wicket down for 65. The weather on Tuesday was so showery and the ground so heavy that the game could not be continued. On Wednesday no play could take place before a-quarter to three, and then conditions were so cheerless that less than 500 persons were on the ground. Rhodes was caught at the wicket with only 4 added, and after his dismissal Carr and Schwarz bowled with such effect that nine wickets were down for 201 when rain caused stumps to be drawn. Tyldesley played a good game and was the only player to meet much success. Score and analysis :— G e n t l e m e n . R. H. Spooner, lbw, b Thompson ........16 F. L. Fane, lbw, b Thompson ... 22 S. Rev. L. E. O w e n . The Rev. Lewis Edward Owen, Vicar of Farndon, Cheshire, since 1878, died suddenly on August 28th. He was a member of the Winchester Eleven of 1861, but did little in the match with Eton, scoring only 6 and 0. H. B. Sutherland bowled him in each innings, and Eton, for whom R. A. H. Mitchell made 60, won by nine wickets. The deceased afterwards proceeded to Oxford, but did not obtain his Blue. He was born on March 27th, 1843. J. D. B. M r . D. G iit it h b . The death on September 1st is announced of Mr. David Griffiths, who was in his sixty- ninth year. He was associated for many years with the Drumpellier C.O., which was founded in 1855, and of which the late Col. Sir David C. R. Carrick-Buchanan, K.C.B., was the captain. Mr. Griffith was the vice-captain of the club, and at one time was considered to be one of the best wicket keepers in Scotland.
