374 CR ICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. S ept . 2. njog. L A N C A S H IR E v. S O M E R S E T . Played at Manchester on August 26 and 27. Lancashire won by 93 inns. On a bowler’s wicket 20 men were dismissed on Thursday for an aggregate of 25(5, Lancashire being left with an advantage of 134 on the innings. Hornby played-on at 27, and for their total of 195 the home side were indebted chiefly to Makepeace and Tyldesley, who added 65 in 50 minutes, and Sharp and Heap, who put on 48 in partnership in 45 minutes. Tyldeslcy was missed at mid-on by ltobson when 1, but Sharp gave no chance in making 52 out of 99 in 105 minutes. The latter, pulfing and driving well, hit six 4’s. Somerset’s innings was noteworthy only for the bowling of Dean, who took nine wickets for 31 runs in a total of 61. Nine were scored off his first over, but then he took six wickets for a single, obtaining five without a run in two overs at 20. The last four wickets put on 41, saving the follow-on, Bisgood and Chidgey being highest seorers with 18 and 13. Rain fell during the night and Somerset’s defeat was almost a foregone conclusion. Bowlers had triumphed on the first day, but on the second they proved even more successful, twenty wickets going down for 159 runs, leaving Lancashire winners by 93. Lewis and Greswell bowled unchanged, sharing the wickets at almost identical cost. Only Makepeace, who batted just over an hour for 21, reached double figures. Somerset were set 194 to win and, once Herbert and Braund had been parted, the home bowlers gradually gained the upper hand, winning the game for their side by the margin stated. Dean again bowled splendidly, and made his record for the match fourteen wickets for 77 runs. Scorc and analysis : — L ancashire . First innings. Second innings. A. H. G L O U C E S T E R S H IR E v. M ID D L E S E X . Played at Bristol on August 26. A O N E -D A Y M ATCH . H A T -T R IC K B Y T A R R A N T . Middlesex won by an innings and 31 runs. Neither side was at full strength for this match, Gloucestershire being without the brothers Roberts and Middlesex lacking the assistance of Warner. The game was played on a wicket all in favour of the attack, as is obvious from the fact that the match was finished in a day, during which 30wickets went down for 259 runs. Everything was dwarfed by the all-round cricket of Tarrant, who took 13 wickets for 67 runs and carried his bat through the innings for 55. Gloucestershire’s batting calls for few remarks. Their first innings, in which the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth wickets fell at 32, was all over in 65 m inutes: their second, wherein the second, third, fourth and fifth wickets went down at 20 and the sixth at 21, lasted 100 minutes, Tarrant performing the hat-trick at the expense of Board, Brownlee and Langdon. Tarrant batted 95 minutes for his runs, giving no chance and hitting three 4’s ; with Murrell, 30 were added for the fourth wicket in a quarter of an hour. In the second innings of the home side Brown hit freely after Tarrant had lost his length: he made 32 in 40 minutes and Imlay helped him to add 24 for the seventh wicket and Dennett 31 for the eighth.
