358 CR ICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g u s t 26, 1909. N O T T IN G H A M S H IR E v. M ID D L E S E X . Playedat Nottingham on August 19,20 and 21. Drawn. Middlesex, who gained no advantage by winning the toss, had all the worst of the opening day’s play, being dismissed for 114 and having 181 runs made against them for the loss of only three wickets. After losing Douglas and Hendren for 13, Warner and Tarrant put on 47 in 45 minutes, but of the others only Ilebden reached double-figures. In dismissing Susskind, Jones made his 500th catch in first-class cricket. Notts, like Middlesex, quickly lost a couple of wickets, James Iremonger and George Gunn being out for 14. Then followed a recovery. John Gunn and Payton added 93 for the third wicket in an hour and a-quarter and the latter and Hardstaff 74 without being parted. A t the end of the day Payton’s score was 91. In all, the fourth wicket added 134 in 130 minutes. Alletson did little, but Jones hit freely and remained until stumps were drawn with Payton, who reached three-figures in three hours and a-quarter and carried out his bat for 142. Only 95 minutes play was possible during Friday. The innings was aeclared first thing on Saturday, leaving Middlesex 194 to save the innings defeat. Payton batted steadily for four hours and a-half for 142, hit a dozen 4’s, and offered only one chance—to Susskind when 69. When Middlesex had lost four wickets for 97 heavy rain fell and caused the match to be abandoned. Score and analysis :— M id d l e s e x . First innings. Second innings. P. F. Played at Portsmouth on August 19, 20 & 21. Drawn. Winning the toss, Hampshire put Leicestershire in, it being thought that batsmen would be at a disadvantage from the start. Tn half-an-hour three wickets went down for 24, after which Jayes and King put 011 44 together and the latter and Thomp son 53. King played a faultless game in making 61 out of 127 in two hours : he showed strong defence, off-drove and cut well, and hit five 4’s. The last six wickets went down for 166. Hampshire lost Bowell at 7, but Mead and White took the total to 49 without further loss. Only 105 minutes could be devoted to play on Friday, but during that time Hampshire added 126 runs for the loss of White, who was caught at mid-ofF at 78, having made 50 out of 71 in 65 minutes. Fry and Mead afterwards put on 97 without further loss, the former carrying out his bat for 59 and the latter, who was missed when 36 and 47, for 58. Play could not be resumed on Saturday until two o’clock. Fry forced the game well and, hitting a six and ten 4’s, made S3 of the 139 added for the w icket: Mead, on the other hand, scored 89 out of 237 in 190 minutes and made only seven 4’s. The latter batted on each of the three days for his score. The last five wickets fell for 19, and Leicestershire went in again 70 behind. Wood and Knight made 68 for the first wicket and 142 had been scored for three when rain came down and caused stumps to be drawn. Score and analysis :— - L e ic e s t e r s h ir e . First innings. Securing first innings on a good wicket, Worcester shire made 292 in a little under four hours. At one time a larger total seemed likely, as before lunch 140 were made for two wickets in 105 minutes. After Bowley was lbw for 15, Pearson and Burns put on 109 together in 70 minutes. Pearson made his 96 out of 232 in three hours by sound cricket: he was sixth out, and hit only five 4’s. Cuffe batted 85 minutes for 53 and the total reached 292. Before play ceased Gloucestershire made 20for the loss of Board’s wicket. There was only 25 minutes’ play on Friday, during which Gloucestershire added 22 runs for the loss of Barnett. On Saturday the seventh wicket fell at 107 on the soft pitch, but A. W. Roberts and Huggins, by steady cricket, made a draw certain. Langdon battedon each of the three days for his 21. The game wasdelayed by showers, and when the innings closed for 198 at 20 minutes past five stump were drawn. • Score and analysis :— W o r c e s t e r sh ir e .
