F eb . 25, 1909. CR ICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 29 CRICKET IN TASMANIA. NORTH v. SOUTH. Played at Hobart on Dee. 26, 28, and 29. The North won by 8 runs. The eighty-second meeting of the North and South of Tasmania produced a capitally-contested match, the North winning by the narrow margin of 8 runs. •The South have now won thirty-seven times and the North thirtj'-six, the remaining nine games having been drawn. Braithwaite s innings of 85 saved the North from collapse on the first day, but he was missed by S. Hawson ere he had made a run. The South just failed to equal the opposing score, although Dodds and Richardson played well, Braith waite taking six wickets for 10£ runs each. In their second innings the North fared badly against Carroll, whose analysis was five for 16, and the South were set only |185 to win. At 'the end of the second day six wickets were down for 56, and the result seemed a foregone conclusion. But on the third morning Carroll, Paton and Facy played so well that the North won by only 8 runs. Owing to indisposition Windsor was unable to bowl or field in the final stage of the game. Southern Tasmania won by an innings and 172 runs. The outstanding feature of this match was the score of 171 by R. Hawson, which contained twenty- eight 4’s. From the start the bowling did not trouble him, and he treated it just as he liked. The only dangerous stroke which he made was after he had passed the hundred ; he lifted the ball towards the track, but the fieldsman misjudged it badly. On the off he scored with great rapidity, cutting beautifully and driving with great precision. In the second innings of Bendigo G. Mackay went in first and carried out his bat.
