Cricket 1909

A u g u s t 12, 1909. CR ICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 333 51. Runs came slowly and when the seventh wicket fell they were only 83 on. Huddleston showed strong defence and, with Dean and Brearley making useful scores, the total had been taken to 184 for nine wickets by the end of the day. Yesterday the home side’s innings finished without a run added, and Worcestershire were set 148to win. Three wickets fell for 41, but Foster and Arnold proved equal to making the remaining 10S without further loss - an excellent performance against such a side. Mason reached 100 in 135 minutes and made his faultless 179 out of 291 in 205 minutes. He scored all round the wicket and hit twenty-six 4’s. With the close of the innings play ceased for the day. Going in again yesterday, Sussex lost the younger Relf at 7, caught at mid-off. Heygate and Vine, who was missed when 36, added 75 in 80 minutes for the second wicket, and the former and Killick 191 for the third. Both the latter reached three-figures, and, when Killick had done so, the innings was declared. There was not time for the game to be finished, but something of a sensation was caused through Kent losing half their wickets for 20. When 14 runs more had been added stumps were drawn. Score and analysis :— S u ss e x . Macleod one wide and one no-ball. SU S S E X v. K E N T . Played at Brighton on August 9, 10 and 11. Drawn. Kent had Hutchings, Woolley and Carr playing for England at the Oval and were therefore greatly weakened. Blythe, however, by hurrying down to Brighton was able to take his place in the side. The wicket was in beautiful order, and Sussex batted on it all day, scoring 340 for eight wickets. Robert Relf made 41 of the first 48 in three-quarters of an hour and, after Killick’s dismissal at 73, Vine and Heygate added 108 in 95 minutes. Vine made his 87 out of 181 in two hours and three quarters without a m istake: he played free cricket after a quiet start and made nine 4’s. Heygate also played a faultless game and hit eight 4’s during the two hours and a-quarter he was in, After the fall of the sixth wicket at 240 Cartwright and Leach put on 60 together in 55 minutes and when stumps were drawn eight wickets were down for 340. The last two wickets went down for 36 on Tuesday, Kent being called upon to face a total of 376. Dillon left at 19, but Seymour played a fine game and put on 57 with Humphreys and 39 with Day ; he batted 80 minutes for his sound innings of 55. With Mason in a fine stand was made for the fourth wicket, he and Day adding 91 in 75 minutes. The latter played very sound cricket for a couple of hours, giving no chance. First innings. On Tuesday the eight outstanding wickets added 110, thanks to a partnership of 64 by Mead and Llewellyn for the fourth wicket, and the visitors were set 109 to win. Despite some good bowling by Brown, the runs were made for the loss of five wickets, Smith playing well for 39. Score and analysis:— H a m p s h ir e . H A M P S H IR E v. The visitors were at full strength, but the home side were without White, Fry and the Evanses. Hampshire lost two wickets for 11 and, despite a useful stand of 40 by Bowell and Llewellyn, had six down for 57. Brown, McDonell and Smith made useful score and the total reached 123. Brown, bowling very fast, proved difficult when Northants went in, the seventh wicket going down at 73. The tail, however, played pluckily, Manning and East adding 51 together and the latter and Wells 34. A lead of 35 was obtained on the innings, and at the end of the day Hampshire, First innings. A.
