Cricket 1909
A ugust 5, 1909. C R IC K E T : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 3°9 S U R R E Y v. SUSSEX. Played at the Oval on July 29, 30 and 31. Drawn. As the result of five hours’ play on Thursday Sussex scored 255 and got one Surrey wicket down for 8. The visitors lost their three first wickets for 31, but Heygate played a fine game and put on 56 in 70 minutes with Relf (A. E.) and 64 in 45 with Cartwright. He made his faultless 64 out of 122 in two hours and a-quarter and hit nine 4’s. Cart wright also batted 135 minutes for 53 — a very valuable, though not flawless, innings: his chief strokes were a 5 and nine 4’s, and in partnership with Cox he added 62 in 55 minutes. Stumps were drawn a little earlier than usual owing to bad light. On Friday play was restricted by rain to two hours and a-quarter, during which the home side took their total to 178 for seven wickets. Davis and Hayes put on 50 for the second wicket in 40 minutes, and after the fall of the sixth, at S5, Platt and Hitch added 84 in 55. A t the end of the day Platt carried out his bat for 49. There was no play between 1.20 and 5.40. On Saturday the game was stopped for 50 minutes in the morning, and the SuiTey innings closed for 188. Going in again on a drying wicket, Sussex lost Vine at 10 and Robert Relf at 26. Killick and Heygate added 33 for the third wicket in 35 minutes and the latter and Cartwright 36 for the fourth in 40. Heygate hit seven 4’s in his excellent 50, for which he batted an hour and 40 minutes. Surrey were left just under two hours in which to make 203. They lost Hayes at 9 and fared so badly against Leach and Relf (A. E.) that half the side wei-e out for 51. The eighth wicket fell at S3, and Surrey owed much to the coolness of Platt at the crisis. Played at H u ll on July 29, 30 and 31. Drawn. Neither side was at full strength for this match, the Australians being without Noble, Armstrong and Gregory and the Counties lacking tlic services of Sharp, Brearley and Hirst. Winning the toss, the home side did very well indeed to make 261 for four wickets in just under four hours on the first day on a slow wicket. Laver and Macartney commenced the bowling, and only 36 had been made, in 30 minutes, when the former bowled Hartley, who had opened the innings with Spooner. The last-named was seen at his best, and played a fine game whilst in with Denton. He reached 50 out of 71 in an hour, and was caught off a skier at mid-off when he had made 66 out of 113 in 110 minutes : he hit six 4’s and offered no chance. His stand for the second wicket with Denton added 77 in an hour. When 85 had been made rain caused an interruption of 15 minutes. Tyldesley failed to play up to his reputa tion and was third out, at 138. Nineteen later Denton’s bright display was closed by a catch in the slips : he made his 55 out of 121 in 105 minutes and hit six 4’s. When 31 he was responsible for a poor stroke in the slips, but he offered no chance. Rhodes was seen at his best, and with Makepeace put on 104 in the last 80 minutes of the day without further loss. He reached 50 out of 85 in 75 minutes, and made his 75 out of 123 in 100. Makepeacc, who carried out his bat for 29, might have been caught in the slips by Trumper when 15. Unfortunately the weather prevented a ball being bowled on Friday and Saturday, and nothing remained but to abandon the match. Score and analysis:— Y orksh ire and L an cash ire .
