3°6 CR ICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. A u g u s t 5> 1909. — but friend and foe alike would rejoice if he distinguished himself in next week’s game by making a large score in his best form on what is probably destined to prove his last appearance in International cricket. He has played so important a part, and played it well, on the world’s cricket stage for almost two decades that a hundred from his bat would make him the most popular man in England. Such a success would revive memories of many a gallant stand by him against the best bowling in the world, of many a well-fought game in which he has led his side to victory. In the hour of triumph such events are bound to be recalled, whereas if defeat is experienced one’s great deeds are all too apt to remain in oblivion. But whether he gains a personal success or not, either as batsman or captain, it should never be forgotten that MacLaren has done much for English cricket both in this country and Australia. It would be difficult to speak in terms of too high praise of his deeds. Noble, the younger of the pair by a couple of years, must, when his captaincy and fielding are taken into consideration, be regarded as the best all-round cricketer Australia has ever produced. Some might claim that honour on behalf of George Giffin or Warwick Armstrong, but neither of those players, excellent though they were, was so good in the field as the New South Welshman. Giffin, moreover, ranked below Noble as a leader, whilst Armstrong has yet to be accorded an opportunity of proving his genius in that important branch of the game. The scores made by Messrs. Noble and MacLaren in Test matches have been :— A. C M. A.
