CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. AUGUST 5. 1909. Together joined in Cricket’s manly toil, Byron, No. 819. VOL. xxv i i i . THURSDAY, AUGUST 5, 1909. one penny . THE TEST MATCH CAPTAINS . MR. M. A . NOBLE. Photos by ] Whether two more able captains than Messrs. Noble and MacLaren have ever found themselves opposed in a Test match between England and Australia may well be doubted, for each ia recognised as one of the very best leaders of men his couutry has produced, not only during recent years but in all time. MacLaren, when at his best, was undoubtedly the finer batsman of the two, but it is more than likely that the great majority of followers of the game would, at any time during the last ten years, have MB. A. C. MACLAREN. [Hawkins &Co ., Brighton. preferred to have Noble on their side owing to his skill as a bowler. In the field each has been “ a host in himself,” being quick on his feet and a sure catch. It would seem that the Englishm an’s star has now set—some men age more rapidly than others
