J u ly 29, 1909. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 2 9 3 MIDDLESEX v. SOMERSET. Played at Lord’s on July 22, 23 and 24. Somerset won by five wickets. Middlesex were without Warner, who was resting in view of the Test match, whilst Somerset"took the field with Johnson away. On a good wicket the home side made only 207 in just under three hours, Lewis and W. T. Greswell bowling very well. After Moon was lbw at 11 Tarrant and Hendren added 44 in 25 minutes and the latter and Robertson 48 in 35. Litteljohn played very steadily, but Mann hit freely and claimed 30 of the 53 runs added for the sixth wicket in 50 minutes. Litteljohn batted 35 minutes ere making a yun. Somerset replied with 140 for two wickets ere bad light stopped play at 6.10. Herbert was seen to much advantage and took out his bat for 56: with Braund he made 48 in 50 minutes and with E. A. Greswell 77 in similar time. On Friday Herbert was caught at cover when the third wicket had added 53 for 78 made out of 178 in two hours and a-half : he hit seven 4’s and offered only one chance—whon 49. Six later Robson left, and when Bisgood was lbw half the side were out for 197. Daniell and Lewis made a useful stand, but the former left at 227 and the latter 14 later. With W. T. Greswell and Spring together a good stand was made, 67 being added in 35 minutes ere the latter was caught at mid-off. With Poyntz in the bright display was continued and 81 were added in similar time for the ninth wicket. Greswell reached 50 out of 75 in 40 minutes and, in all, scored 100 out of 148 in 75 : he hit fourteen 4’s, driving with great power, but was missed in the long-field by Hendren off Tarrant when 58. He and Poyntz took the score from 300 to 350 in 25 minutes. The innings lasted four hours and 50 minutes and realised 397. When Middlesex went in again, 190 behind, Tarrant scored freely and had made 33 out of 37in 25 minutes when he was lbw. Then a collapse set in against W. T. Greswell and half the side were out for 53, the third, fourth and fifth wickets all falling at that total. Moon, generally a very fast scorer, batted 45 minutes for 6. Hebden and Mann faced the crisis bravely and in 53 minutes added 83 for the sixth wicket. Hebden made his 52 without a chance and Mann carried out his bat for 44 at the end of the day, when six wickets were down for 180. With only 3 a£ded on Saturday Murrell was caught at slip: he had helped to add 47 in 50 minutes. Trott made 22 out 36 in half-an-hour, whilst at 222 Mann was caught at second-slip off a skier, after batting two hours for 56. Mignon ran up 28 in a-quarter of an hour and Somerset were set 65 to win. It will be seen that W. T. Greswell took nine wickets in the match and scored 100. Somerset lost both Herbert and Braund at 34 and E. A. Greswell at 40. Spring failed to score and Lewis was caught at the wicket for 15, but Middlesex were beaten by five wickets. Warwickshire gave a very poor exhibition on Thursday, being dismissed for 199 on a perfect wicket and taking four hours to make the runs. Only nine 4’s were hit during the innings ! Wind ridge and Foster added 48 together, and Glover and Santall 41. Rhodes bowled very well indeed, and in the last 35 minutes of play scored 45 with Wilson without loss. Play on the second day was limited by showers to four hours, during which time Yorkshire took their total to 315. W ith 20 added Rhodes was out, but Denton and Wilson added 84 in 70 minutes, the latter then being, caught for 47 made out of 149 in 130 minutes—a cautious display. Denton made 60 out of 102 in an hour and a-half, and Hirst afterwards ran up 48 in 40 minutes and put on 67 in that time for the fourth wicket with Rothery. Hardisty and Bates made useful contribu tions, but the innings closed for 315, made in four hours and a-half. On Saturday Warwickshire had half their side out for 104 by lunch, although Lilley and Quaife put on 35 for the third wicket. Glover afterwards hit freely, reaching 52 out of 58 in 40 minutes and making his 85 out of 98 in 90. Yorkshire were set 76 to win, and lost half their wickets for 41. Rothery apd Bates proved equal to the crisis, however, and won the game without further loss. Score and analysis:— W a r w ic k sh ir e . First innings. Second innings. On Thursday the visitors collapsed on a good wicket in startling fashion for 121 against Relf (A. E.) and Leach, who bowled unchanged. The only two stands of any note were 31 by Pearson and Arnold for the fourth wicket and 42 for the last by Simpson-Hayward. When the eighth fell, at 68, Relf had taken six of them 14. He got Cuffe and Burns caught by his brother at slip off consecutive balls and had Turner missed off his next delivery there. Vine batted very steadily when Sussex went in and scored only 16«in an hour and a-half. His partnership with Relf (R. R.) for the first wicket realised 128 in 125 minutes. The latter reached 51 out of 65 in 75 minutes and 100 out of 151 in 150 : in all he made 152 of the 212 scored for four wickets in 200 minutes without a chance. On Tuesday Relf made the highest score of his career, carrying his bat through the innings of 433 for 272, made in five hours and three-quarters. He hit thirty-four 4’s and, when 269, completed his thousand runs for tho season. He offered a hard chance to Burrows at point when 165 but made no other mistake, and reached 200 out of 291 in 260 minutes. Cartwright helped to put on 64 in 40 minutes and Leach 84 in 35. Going in again, 312 behind, Worcestershire lost W. L. Foster at 17. But Bowley made 60 out of 85 in 105 minutes, and after the latter’s dismissal Pearson and H. K. Foster took the total to ISO without further loss. In all they added 137 for the third wicket, the former batting four hours and the latter 140 minutes. Despite their effort, however, seven wickets were down for 275 and it seemed unlikely that the innings defeat would be avoided. But Arnold and Burns added 89 in 65 minutes, and Sussex were set 44 to win, a number obtained with out loss. The younger Relf made 307 runs in the match without being dismissed.
