JULY 29, 1909. “ Together joined in CricKet’s manly toil.”— B yron . No. 8 18 . vou. x x v i i i . THURSDAY, JULY 29, 1909. o n e p e n n y . SU RR EY CR ICKET . At the moment Surrey cricket is under a cloud. When, early in May, Hayes, Hobbs and Hayward each made over 200 runs in an innings, and the bowlers obtained their wickets at a reasonable cost, it appeared probable that the side would experience a successful season. Such, however, has not proved to be the case, for several causes have contributed to bring the side down from the first place among the counties to the fourth. It may be said, without fear of contradiction, that on four of the five occasions on which they have been beaten this year fortune, in one form or another, has been unkind to them, whilst in the fifth case—last week’s match with Kent at Blackheath—they were obliged to take the field with a strangely unfamiliar team. At the present time Hayward, Hobbs and Leveson-Gower are unable to play, the two first-named owing to injuries and the latter on account of a family bereavement, whilst Crawford is showing a preference for club cricket, and Marshal has been dropped owing to temporary loss of form.
