Cricket 1909

286 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 22, 1909. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE v. NOTTING HAMSHIEE. Played at Northampton on July 19, 20 & 21. Northants won by seven wickets. Notts, who were without Jones and Iremonger, both indisposed, were sent in first after losing the toss and in three hours and a-half were disposed of for 14(5, the last six wickets going down in half-an- hour for 16. The only stands worthy of note were by Gunn (G.) and Hardstaff, who took 80 minutes to add 42, and by Gunn (J.) and Payton, who put on 53 in an hour. Northants lost Kingston at 1 and Hawtin at 7, but sustained no other disaster, and by the time stumps were drawn had 140 runs on the board, Pool being 86 not out and Smith 38. The former reached 50 out of 66 in 55 minutes and, although hitting well, was twice missed—when 30 and 57. Northants obtained a lead of 155 on Tues day, thanks chiefly to Pool and Smith, who put on 169 for the third wicket. The former hit two 6’s and nine 4’s and offered three chances during the 160 minutes he was in. Smith was missed when 79 and ae:ain when 109 and 117: he hit eight 4’s. Manning and Wells reached double-figures, but the subsequent batting was disappointing. Hallam did well to take six wickets for 86 runs in such a total. Upon going in the second time, Notts lost Turner for 6, and, although Gunn (G.) and Hardstaff added 97 for the second wicket in 95 minutes, Payton, Gunn (J.) and Alletson failed. James and Oates, however, put on 33 without being parted, but by the end of the day six wickets were down for 147. On the third day Oates and Clifton were dismissed by Thompson with successive balls and the home side were set only 30 to win. The number, however, cost three wickets, in addition to which Smith was missed at slip off two consecutive deliveries. Score and analysis:— N otts . First innings. N. C. V. Played at Gravesend on July 19, 20 and 21. Kent won by 279 runs. On a good wicket on Monday eighteen wickets fell for 363 runs. Neither Mason, A. P. Day nor Daniell played, each side being under full strength in consequence. After Kent had lost Dillon at 22 and Seymour at 23, Humphreys aud Hutchings added 56 in 35 minutes and the latter and Woolley 42 in 30. Humphreys hit six 4’s and was out to a splendid catch by Robson, who took a smart return with his left hand. Hutchings had made 37 out of 98 in 65 minutes when he was well thrown out by Spring from mid-off. After lunch the last six wickets fell for 67 and the innings closed for 209. Somerset lost their four first wickets for 25, but Robson, who drove well, stayed with Braund whilst 83 were put on in 70 minutes. When stumps were drawn with eight wickets down for 154 the last- named carried out his bat for 52. On the second morning the innings closed for 157. Brannd hit a 6 (off Blythe), a 5, and three 4’s in his 54, aud batted just over two hours. Going in the second time Kent lost Dillon at 18 and Humphreys at 24. Hutchings, however, hit vigorously and put on 65 in 30 minutes with Seymour, 95 in 45 with Woolley and SS in 40 with Hardinge. Ho made 50 in 50 minutes and 100 (out of 168) in 80. Kent made 200 runs in 115 minutes and Hutchings obtained his 155 out of 296 in two hours and a-quarter: he hit a 6 and twenty-four 4’s, driving with great power, and did not make a bad stroke during his delightful display. Kent scored 378 in three hours and a-half, and the conclusion of the innings was marked by a curious incident. Blythe was caught in the long-field and had returned to the pavilion when he was brought back by the Somerset captain on the ground that the catch had been made over the boundary. Set 431 to win, Somerset lost seven wickets for 104 before stumps were drawn. Yesterday the last three wickets fell for 47, leaving K ent successful by tho margin stated. Score and analysis:— K ent . Played at Southampton on July 19,20 and 21. Hampshire won by 152 runs. The home side batted all the time available, five and a-half hours, on Monday, and scored 351. Stone, going in first, scored 92 out of 140 in two hours and 20 minutes without a chance, hitting well to leg and making twelve 4’s. White batted an hour and three- quarters for his runs and Evans half-an-hour less : each hit nine 4’s. McDonell made his runs by vigorous cricket and only two members of the side failed to reach double-figures. On the second morning, after W. L. Foster was bowled at 59, Bowley and Pearson added 147 for the second wicket, but the former was missed when 25 and the latter when 17 : Bowley hit fifteen 4’s and Pearson a 6 and eight 4,s. The second wicket fell at 206, but the rest added only 125, no-one apart from Simpson-Hayward doing much. Going in again Hampshire made 44 by the time stumps were drawn for the loss of Stone. Yesterday, after both Hill and White had left at 72, Bowell and Llewellyn made a fine stand and had put on 199 without being parted when the innings was closed. The former was missed at 11 and 104, but the latter gave no chance; Bowell hit fourteen 4’s and Llewellyn fifteen. Worcester, set 292 to get in three hours, were given a good start, but a rot set in and Hampshiro pulled off the match by the margin stated. Score and analysis H ampshire . First innings.
