Cricket 1909
J u ly 22, 1909. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 285 morning both Relf (R.R.) and Killick had left by the time 28 had been added, the fourth wicket falling at 62. Then followed an excellent partner ship on the part of Heygate and the elder Relf, who seemed to find little terror in the attack. Together they added 137 for the fifth wicket before the former was caught after batting 100 minutes for 86 , in which were fifteen 4’s. Cartwright also scored freely, but was badly missed by MacLaren when 0. Relf remained until he had made 118 by fine cricket and was then caught at the wicket, but after his dis missal little was done and. although Sussex played a very plucky uphill game, they were beaten by ten wickets. On Monday the home side scored 332 in four hours and three-quarters and Gloucestershire replied with 10 without loss. Douglas and Fane gave their side a good start by making 77 together in 70 minutes, and McGahey, without being seen at his best, played a very useful innings. The last-named added 48 in 40 minutes with Gillingham and 66 in 55 with Free man, and hit five 4’s during the two hours and a-quarter he was in. Grinter showed very promising form on his first appearance for the County, and made his 35 out of 9-1 in 35 minutes. On the second day Buckenham bowled Dipper at 15 and Salter and Langdon with consecutive balls at 33, whilst three later Holloway was so severely hurt by a ball ftom Douglas that he was obliged to retire. Merrick proved a very useful partner to Board, and the pair scored so readily that 70 were added in 25 minutes : in all, they put on 101 in 50 minutes for the fourth wicket, Merrick making 58 in an hour. Board batted an hour and three-quarters for 66 and hit six 4’s. Brown fell to a good catch by Gillingham, and at 147 Huggins played-on. Holloway, a left-hander, who had come in again, played good cricket for over an hour, and when the innings closed for 221 carried out his bat for 34. Buckenham bowled his best, and, keeping a fine length and maintaining a great pace, took eight wickets for 59. Leading by 111 Essex scored 171 for five wickets upon going in again, Fane, Perrin and Gillingham all being seen to advantage. The two first-named added 105 for the second wicket in 90 miuutes and Perrin and Gillingham 46 for the fourth. Eighty-eight were added for three more wickets yesterday and then the innings was closed, leaving Gloucestershire 371 to win. Reeves, Grinter and Read made their runs readily, the two last-named adding 46 in 15 minutes. With only 21 scored Salter was bowled, but Board and Dipper added 87 for the second wicket ere the latter met a similar fate. With Langdon in runs came fast, he and Board playing freely and with fine judgment. In an hour the pair put on 97, Langdon, who hit eight 4’s, making 59 of the number. The other players, however, were unable to score fast enough to win, but they missed doing so by a small margin and are to be congratulated on their great fight. Board played an excellent game, and it was no fault of his that the victory was not gained. Score and analysis :— E ssex . First innings. F. L.
