Cricket 1909
J u l y 2 2 , 1909. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 2 7 7 SOMERSET v. WORCESTERSHIRE. Played at Taunton on July 15, 16 and 17. Worcestershire won by 10 runs. Rain during Wednesday night prevented runs being obtained with any ease, only 277 being made on Thursday for 15 wickets. Both Pearson and Simpson-Hayward were missed three times : the former hit a 6 (off Greswell) and five 4’s and the latter seven 4’s. Johnson batted soundly for 38, but was missed when 35. The ball that bowled him broke the middle stump. When play ceased half the side were out for 88 . On Friday E. A. Greswell scored 27 and was seventh out, at 122. His brother and Bisgood also did well and in 40 minutes put on GOfor the eighth wicket. W hen the innings closed, after lasting three hours and a-half,Somerset were 11 ahead. Worcestershire would have fared badly indeed when they went in a second time had it not been for Bowley, who, playing a free game, rcached 50 out of 72 in 55 minutes, and, in all, scored 65 out of 93 in 80. He gave no chance and hit eleven 4’s. With three wickets down for 113 rain stopped play, and upon the resumption the last seven wickets went down for 24 in 45 minutes, Braund making five catches, four of them in the slips. Set 127 to win, Somerset scored 42 for three wickets, all taken by Burns, who went on to bowl at 19. On Saturday the bowlers proved very successful, and Daniell played a fine game. Braund remained whilst 14 were added for the sixth wicket and W. T. Greswell helped to put on 38 for the eighth. Pearson took the last three wickets for 12 runs, and Worcestershire won by 10 runs. During the last morning one of the umpires, Moss, retired from the game, owing to indisposition, and Mr. H. Martyn took his place. Score and analysis:— W orcestershire . First innings. H. G. Notts were obliged to play without Jones, who was indisposed. They lost the toss and fielded the whole of the first day whilst Yorkshire made 331 for nine wickets on a perfect pitch in five hours and a-half. Rhodes played a slow game, taking two hours to make 59, but he helped Denton to add 122 in 100 minutes. Denton reached 50 in an hour and 100 in 90 minutes, and found useful partners in Hirst and Wilkinson, who helped to add 61 in 55 minutes and 80 in 70 respectively. Denton, seventh out (at 325) made 184 out of 307 in 290 minutes : he hit twenty-one 4’s, made his runs all round the wicket, but was missed when 102, 135, 164 and 179. There was much rain in the night and, as it was followed by sun, the Yorkshire innings was declared at lunch-time on the following day. No play was possible until the afternoon, and the game was in progress on Friday for only three hours. During that time Notts made 104 for four wickets. Ire monger and George Gunn made 46 for the first wicket in 75 minutes and the latter and Hardstaff added 40 for the second in 65. Gunn (G.) played faultless cricket for 44 not out, but his display, though very valuable, was not attractive. The wicket was difficult on Saturday and two men were out with only six added. Alletson helped Gunn to put on 30 in 20 minutes but no one else gave him any assistance, and when the innings elosed for 188 he was left to carry out his bat for 91, made in 280 minutes. It was s, most valuable display, which saved his side from a collapse ; he hit eight 4’s and enabled Notts to save the innings defeat. When Yorkshire went in for the second time the wicket was not so bad as it had been earlier in the day, but two wickets nevertheless went down before lunch for 34. Rothery failed to score, but Hirst did well and had made 50 when the innings was declared closed with four wickets down for 111. It will be seen that the closure was applied twice in the match by the side. Denton, considering the state of the game, played a most unenterprising innings, taking 55 minutes to score 15. Notts had not the slightest difficulty in saving the game. Score and analysis :— Y orkshire . First innings. Second innings. SUSSEX Played at Tunbridge Wells on July 15, 16 and 17. TUNBRIDGE WELLS WEEK. Drawn. The slow bowlers derived some assistance from the wicket on Thursday, and Kent did well to make 282. Mason reappeared and played a fine game, and A. P. Day also came back again. A fine start was given the side by Humphreys and Dillon, who scored 76 together in 70 minutes. Hutchings, Woolley and Day made but 20 between them, and half the side were out for 156. Seymour, by excel lent cricket, made his 53 out of 99 in just under two hours: he was sixth out, at 175. Mason also was seen to advantage and was fortunate in the support he received from the tail, Huish helping to add 35 and Blythe staying in for an hour and a-quarter whilst 63 were added. Mason, last out, scored 55 out of 126 in 140 minutes by watchful and sound cricket: he gave no chance. In the last few minutes of the day Sussex made 3 runs without loss. Rain prevented a ball being bowled on Friday, but play was resumed at the advertised hour on the last day. Smith and Butt made 21 together ere the former was out to a splendid running catch by Mason in the long-field. Butt left at 40 and the total was only 53 when the fifth wicket fell. Killick made 19 out of 38 in 50 minutes and Cartwright'showed strong .defence. The latter batted an hour and 40‘ minutes for 18 and did not score the last 25 minutes he was in. After lunch five wickets went down for 8 runs in 35 minutes, the innings closing for 97. The bowling, of Blythe and Fairservice on the drying wicket was most effective. In the follow-on Smith was bowled for 10 and Heygate -sent back for 3. But Vine and Relf (R.R.) made a stand and saved the game for Sussex, although after they were parted a collapse took place. Relf (R.R.) batted 90 minutes for 57, and Vine remained unbeaten to the end. When play ceased Sussex, with two wickets in hand, required 34 runs to save the innings defeat.
