Cricket 1909

2 1 CR ICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. Feb. 25 , 1909 . at the wicket, and at 55 L. R. Hill was ably run out by Barnes and Emery. C. Hill made some powerful strokes, but was bowled by Kelleway at 81, and it was not until Dolling joined Gehrs that much resistance was made against the attack. The pair caused many bowling changes and took the total to 132, when Dolling was lbw. Gehrs was playing excellently, but neither Pellew, Claxton, nor O’Connor did much, the seventh wicket falling at 189. Gehrs reached 50 in an hour and a-quarter, and altogether batted one hundred and thirty-three minutes for his admirable 102, which was disfigured by only one chance, and that not an easy one. Woodforde made a useful 35, and, with Whitty making double figures, the total reached 272. Kelleway came out with four wickets, including those of C. Hill, Pellew and Claxton, for 33 runs. Bardsley and Macartney gave the home side a fine start, but the visitors had only themselves to thank, for the latter was missed twice early in his innings off L. R. Hill, when 12 by the wicket-keeper and a run later by Mayne at slip: 50 went up in thirty- three minutes, and at the end of the first day the score was 88 for no wicket. On the Monday three figures were reached in eighty-six minutes, and Bardsley completed 50 in an hour and a-half and his companion his five minutes later. Then the pace of the scoring increased until the stand had lasted two hours and a-half and realised 203. Then Macartney was lbw for 100, a score which included a dozen 4’s ; he was faulty at the start of his innings but improved as he warmed to his work. Bardsley, then 94, quickly lost Noble, and saw E. F. Waddy yorked by a no-ball from L. R. Hill as soon as he went in. He reached his 100 in two hundred and twenty-eight minutes, but at 251 lost E. F. Waddy, who was out to a good catch at the wicket. Nine runs later he, too, was sent back for a sound and faultless innings of 119 made out of 260 in two hundred minutes ; he hit ten 4’s and made his runs by a variety of strokes. The association of Gregory and E. L. Waddy realised 03, and took the total to 323 for the fifth wicket. Barnes made only 3 and Cotter eleven, but the eighth wicket added 40, of which number Emery, who made a hit for 0 off Cotter, claimed 18. Kelleway proved another useful partner to Gregory, 38 being put 011 ere the latter fell to Whitty for 94 made out of 179 in one hundred and forty minutes. The veteran obtained most of his runs by strokes behind the wicket and offered only one chance. The last wicket added 17, and New South Wales obtained a lead of 175 011 the innings. The South Australians made a disastrous start, losing Mayne and C. Hill for 5. L. R. Hill soon fell before Cotter, but, as in the first innings, Gehrs and Dolling effected an improvement. Gehrs, before being caught at long-off, made 46 in an hour and a-quarter, and helped to add 82 for the fourth w ick et: he hit seven 4’s. Pellew, Claxton and O’Connor again made only 7 between them, but Woodforde, hitting Cotter for 14 in an over, scored 25 in twenty minutes. Dolling batting two hours for his invaluable 78 and was ninth out, at 192, he hit ten 4’s and was the main cause of his side escaping defeat by an innings. Cotter, who bowled at a great pace (and delivered several no-balls), took five wickets for 05 runs. New South Wales, set but 18 to win, made the runs for the loss of Emery, who was bowled by Clem Hill, and accordingly won by nine wickets. Score and analysis :— S outh A u stralia . First innings. THE CRICKETERS’ DIARY,* There is still no handier or neater little companion for the cricketer than Messrs. G. G. Bussey and Co.’s Diary. It is bound in leather, has gilt edges, is clearly printed, and can be tucked away in one’s waistcoat pocket. In addition to the spaces reserved for the diaiy, the fixtures for 1900, and the laws of the game, there are many useful statistics of the kind to which reference is frequently made during the course of a match. The publication is now in its eighteenth year. CRICKET IN INDIA. NORTH MALABAR v. CALICUT. Played at Cannanore on January 14. North Malabar won by 127 runs. L. Phillips took six. wickets for 36 runs in Calicut’s first innings and it appeared not unlikely that North Malabar would collapse in similar fashion against Mylne for half the side were out for 40. Then Gopalan and W. W. Phillips put on 94 together and, when the innings closed for 190, the latter earned out his bat for a faultless 107. Langley and Wood made 77 for the first wicket when the visitors went in the second time. Score:— C alicut . First innings. Sceond innings. T. Acliuthan, c Stranack, b c Stranack, b L.
