Cricket 1909

270 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly 15, 1909. WARWICKSHIRE v. SUSSEX. Played at Edgbaston on July 12, 13 and 14. Warwickshire won by two wickets. To such an extent did the ball triumph over the bat on Monday that during the day 22 wickets went down for 288 runs. After Sussex had lost three wickets for two runs, Heygate and Cartwright put on 33 together, making the only stand of the innings. The former, who was missed at the wicket when 17, batted an hour and a-half for 54 and hit eight 4’s. The innings lasted an hour and three-quarters, and Lilley caught four and stumped one. Charlesworth and Kinneir made 34 for the home side’s first wicket, but there were many failures afterwards, although the wicket was better than whilst Sussex were batting. Glover hit freely for 34 at the end of the innings, and played confidently against Leach, whose eight wickets cost less than eight runs each. In a minority of 44, Sussex had made 64 for the loss of Robert Relf and Cartw’right by the time stumps were drawn. On Tuesday Vine was caught at the wicket with 22 added, and Heygate, after batting for 80 minutes, was held at cover. Play was interrupted several times by showers, and during the luncheon interval there was a heavy fall of rain which delayed the game. Relf (A.E.)and Cox did little and the sixth wicket fell at 124. Killick and Leach played care fully, but both were out at 155, the former having batted 135 minutes for his distinctly useful 41. Vincett afterwards hit hard and when stumps were drawn with nine wickets down for 206, carried out his bat for 34. On Wednesday the innings closed for 216, leaving the home side 173 to win. With only 9 scored Charlesworth was bowled, and 5 later Kinneir retired hurt, and was soon dismissed after continuing. At lunch half the side were out for 69 and a defeat appeared almost certain. Fishwick and Windridge, however, put on 42 in 45 minutes and after the fall of the eighth Foster and Santall added the necessary 47 without being parted. It was a most creditable win, and Warwickshire’s first success of the season. Score and analysis:— S u ssex . First innings. Relf(R.), c Lilley, b Santall 1 Vine, c Glover, b Field ... 0 P. The chapters devoted to the practical side of tbe game never become dull, for his remarks are interspersed with interesting comments concerning well-known players. It is worthy of note that Mr. MacLaren opines that ‘ self-taught cricketers are always superior t) the taught ones, and always will be, for a great batsman invariably has some peculiarity, which conduces to his prominence, which no coaching can teach.” He gives much advice which should prove of value to young cricketers, whilst his remarks on “ Three-Day Test Matches ” and “ Memorable Matches I Have Played In ” are decidedly interesting. In the chapter entitled “ Things That Go to Win a Match ” the author states that “ The 1902 Test Match at the Oval was, in my opinion, won by Jessop, owing to running Trumper out in the second innings.” Most followers of the game consider that England’s success on that occasion by a wicket was due chiefly to Jessop’s wonderful innings of 101 on the third afternoon. *A.
