Cricket 1909
254 CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u ly 8, 1909. NORTHAMPTONSHIRE v. HAMPSHIRE. Playel at Northampton on July 5, 6 and 7. Northants won by one wicket. With W. H. B. Evans, Fry, and Capt. White away, Hampshire were not at full strength, but, thanks to Mead and, in a lesser degree, Stone and Llewellyn, they made 271 in their tirst innings. Bowell was out at 25, but Stone helped to add 92 for the second wicket and Llewellyn (34 for the third. Mead, fifth out (at 236), batted 215 minutes for 114. He hit eleven 4’s, mostly drives and strokes to leg, but was twice missed—by Manning at short-leg when 61 and by Wells off his own bowling when 103. The last five wickets fell for 35, and at the end of the day Northants made 43 for the loss of Manning. Tues day’s play was marked by a fine innings by Vials, who made 50 in 105 minutes and 100 in three hours. Ho put on 102 for the sixth wicket with Smith in 80 minutes, and batted three hours and three-quarters for 129—his first hundred in a great match. He hit well to leg and made some fine cuts, but was missed at the wicket when 23. His chief hits were eighteen 4’s. When Hampshire had made 3 runs without loss in their second innings play ceased for the day ; rain caused a stoppage of just over two hours, which accounts for the little progress made with the match on Tuesday. Yesterday showers restricted play to such an extent that by lunch time the total had only been advanced to 41 for three wickets, both Bowell and Newman being got rid of. Sprot after wards played a useful game but, being poorly supported, the home side were set only 114 to win. During the innings Thompson took his 100th wicket of the season. Vials, Denton and Pool were all quickly dismissed, but Kingston and Thompson made valuable scores and, thanks to them and Manning, the runs were made with a wicket to spare. There was considerable excitement at the finish. Score and analysis:— H ampshire . First innings. Second innings. Played at Manchester on July 5, 6 and 7. Lancashire won by an innings and 185 runs. Lancashire won the toss for the seventh time in succession, and commenced batting with R. H. Spooner, who was making a very welcome re appearance, and Hartley. Owing to illness, Hornby was unable to play, and in his absence the side was led by MacLaren. Spooner had made only 10 when Strudwick missed running him out from a smart throw-in by Hobbs. The consequence was that the first wicket did not fall until 56, when the player named was caught at the wicket. With Tyldesley in a fine stand was made, during which Crawford was unfortunate enough to run into the pavilion rails and damage the muscles of an arm. lt was very hard luck for Surrey, especially as everything had been against them in the previous match between the two sides. When the second wicket had put on 95 Hartley was sent back for 56, made out of 151 in 130 minutes. Sharp helped to add 36, and then, 10 later, Tyldesley’s fine innings came to an end. He made his 77 out of 141 in two hours without a chance, making the majority of his runs by cuts and hits to leg. The remainder of the innings was marked by a capital display on the part of Huddleston, who batted two hours and a-quarter for 78 not out. In Blomley he found a very useful jartner, the pair putting on 64 for the last wicket in 55 minutes. Late in the afternoon another piece of misfortune befell Surrey, Hobbs splitting his hand whilst endeavouring to catch Brearley. On Tuesday it transpired that Hobbs would be unable to bat, and that his absence from cricket might last a fortnight. There had been rain during the night and morning, and it was not until nearly four o’clock that the play could be resumed. Marshal left with only two scored, and three later Hayes also was out. Hayward batted 35 minutes for 22 and Ducat helped him to add 34 for the third wicket. No other player reached double-figures, however, and the innings closed for 56. In the follow-on the side made 22 for the loss of Marshal and were there fore in a hopeless position when stumps were drawn. All the luck was against Surrey and every thing came off for Lancashire. Yesterday Surrey again fared badly, Lancashire winning by an innings and 185 runs. Heap took five wickets for 16. Score and analysis :— L ancashire . R. H. Spooner,cStrud- 32 56 17 wick, b Lees A. Sussex gave a very disappointing display on an easy-paced wicket on Monday, being put out in two hours and a-half for 150. After the fall of the fourth wicket at 49, Heygate and Cartwright put on 44 in 40 minutes, but there was no other stand of note. Jayes, bowling rather faster than usual, took six wickets for 55. Leicestershire gave a very different display, and by the end of the day had made 151 for two wickets. Knight and Wood made 57 for the first wicket in 70 minutes and the latter and King SO for the second in 90. King, missed when 22, carried out his bat for 55 at the end of the day. There was rain during the night, but the wicket was damaged only to a very slight extent. A few wickets fell quickly, and half the side were out for 175. King hit seven 4’s during the two hours he was in. Whitehead and Crawford put on 56 together in 80 minutes, and when the innings closed for 285 the former carried his bat for a sound display for 57. Rain afterwards came down heavily, and no further play was possible. Play was also out of the question yesterday owing to rain, the match consequently being drawn with the score as under:— S ussex .
