Cricket 1909
238 CR ICK ET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J u l y i , 1909 . WOKCESTERSHIBE v. SUSSEX. Played at Worcester on June 28, 29 and 30. Drawn. Play was fairly level on Monday, Sussex scoring 192 and the home side replying with 91 for three wickets. Sussex lost eight wickets for 106, and for their score were largely indebted to Leach, who batted 65 minutes for 56 and carried out his b a t; he hit five 4’s and put on 66 in 40 minutes with Vincett for the ninth wicket. Cartwright also did well, and made his 32 in an hour and twenty-five minutes. Worcestershire lost their first three wickets for 14, after which Pearson and W. L. Foster put 011 77 in 90 minutes without further loss. Play could not be continued on Tuesday owing to rain and yesterday the game could not be proceeded with until half-past two. Pearson, who hit seven 4’s in his 60, was soon out, but, thanks to W. L. Foster, Simpson-Hayward and Arnold, and a useful last wicket stand, Worces tershire gained a lead of seven on the innings. Belf (A. E.) bowled splendidly, being very true and vary ing his pace well. With no chance of a definite result being reached, interest in the game naturally decreased. When play ceased the score was as follows. Score and analysis : — S u ss e x . First innings. Second innings. LANCASHIRE. Played at Nottingham on June 28, 29 and 30. Notts won by an innings and 80 runs. Although without Macleod and Worsley, Lancashire put a good side into the field, but had none the best of the play on the opening day, when they scored 213 and saw Notts reply with 122 for one wicket. Makepeace and Hartley gave the side a good start by making 85 for the first wicket in an hour aud a-quarter, but of the others only Sharp, who batted 80 minutes, and MacLaren, who was in half an-hour less, reached double figures. The Notts men bowled well and were supported by keen fielding. In the last 110 minutes of the day Jones and Iremonger made 122 for the first wicket against Brearley, Dean, Huddleston and Heap, stumps being drawn when the former, who hit seven 4’s in his chanceless innings of 68, was caught. On Tuesday Iremonger and Gunn (G.) remained together whilst 61 runs were added for the second wicket in 75 minutes. Both men, however, were lucky. Iremonger remained until he had scored 130 out of 26S in 285 minutes and was then well run out by Tyldesley. He hit ten 4’s, but gave an unattractive display : he offered no chance, although many of his strokes were fortunate. Hardstaff, who had put on 85 with Iremonger, added 78 more with Payton in an hour. There were several showers during the afternoon, and by the time the day’s cricket ended the total had been taken to 391 for seven wickets (Payton, not out 59). Considering the state of the game and of the wicket the Notts run-getting was, on the whole, inexcusably slow. Yesterday 23 runs, of which Payton made 13, were added for the loss of two more wickets and then the closure was applied, leaving Lancashire 201 to make to save the innings defeat. Payton hit eleven 4’s during the 105 minutes he was in and played a splendid innings. It was a heavy task the visitors had before them, and, although they started well, the bowling of Iremonger and Wass proved too much for them and they were beaten as stated. Makepeace played a sound game and both Tyldesley and Sharp were out when they seemed to have played themselves in. JThe latter was out to a splendid catch by James.
