J u l y i , 1909 . CRICKET: A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 229 SURREif v. GLOUCESTERSHIRE Played at the Oval on June 24, 25 and 26. Drawn. Heavy rain prevented play on Thursday and Friday and on Saturday it was half-past two before a ball could be bowled. Gloucestershire, winning the toss, went in first, but were dismissed by Smith and Rushby for 05 in 95 minutes. The only stand of the innings was by Langdon and Dapper, who put on 42 together for the third wicket. Smith took six wickets for a fraction over 6 runs apiece. Surrey experienced no difficulty in passing the rival score, Hobbs making 31 out 41 in 40 minutes, Hayes 47 out of 65 in three-quarters of an hour, and Crawford 32 out of 38 in 10 minutes. Dennett took all five wickets which fell for 94 runs. Score and analysis :— G l o u c e st e r sh ir e . Langdon, c Davis, b Smith .................. 22 Board, b Smith .......... 1 G. L. On the first day Eton scored 153 for threo wickets (Windsor-Clive, 43 not out), Twining .and Hollins making 77 for the first wicket. On Saturday the innings was closed with five wickets down for 248. Winchester could do little with the bowling of Fowler and Kenyon-Slaney, and but for a plucky second innings by their captain, Parke, would have been beaten by an innings. N orth an ts w on by 51 runs. The ground was so saturated after previous heavy rain that it was not until ten minutes to one that a start could be made with this match. Pool hit well for 40, making two 6’s, a 5 and three 4’s, and Smith and Thompson put on 91 for the fourth wicket in an hour and three-quarters. Smith, hitting four 4’s, batted 140 minutes for 56. In response to the total of 168, the home side made 8 without loss in the last few minutes of the day. On the second day three wickets fell for the addition of eight runs and, although Lilley and Quaife added 30, six men were out at lunch time for 96. Baker batt( d steadily and when the innings, after lasting two hours and a-half, closed for 121, carried out his bat for 37. Smith was the most successful of the visit ing bowlers, his six wickets costing a trifle over six runs each. Northants, with a lead of 47, scored 131 in their second innings. Vials and Knight made 34 for the first wicket and Pool and Denton 42 for the seventh. Pool played a delightful game, and, in making 51 in 65 minutes, hit a 6 and five 4’s. Set 179 to win, Warwickshire made 63 for the loss of Charlesworth, Kinneir and Baker in the last 55 minutes of the day.
