Cricket 1909

228 CR ICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J uly i , 1909. THE AUSTRAL IANS . 15 th M atch . — v. LANCASHIRE AND YORKSHIRE. Played at Manchester on June 24, 25 and 2fi. Drawn. To the great disappointment of thousands of enthusiasts rain prevented a ball being bowled on either of the two first days, and, although a start was made on Saturday, it was not until noon, and then on a wicket which had not been set apart for the match. The Australians, successful in the toss, decided to make use of the soft wicket, and com menced batting with Armstrong and Bardsley, who were opposed by Hirst and Brearley. With only a single scored Birst bowled down the left-hander’s off-stump, and Noble joined Armstrong. The latter, ere he had made a run was missed at slip by Tyldesley off Brearley, and, this notwithstanding, the fast bowler retired in favour of Huddleston at 18. When he had scored 9 the Victorian was again let off, this time by Hunter standing back to Hirst, whose following delivery dismissed Noble when the wicket had put on 24 in half-an-hour. With Ransford in a good stand was made, although Armstrong, when 25, was missed—a hard chance to Hirst at mid-off off Rhodes. So good a stand did the pair make that 111 were added for the third wicket. Trumper, Hopkins and Macartney made 11 between them, and when it seemed likely that the end of the innings was not far off Carter remained with Armstrong whilst (50 were put on without a separation being effected. With six wickets down for 217 the innings was clo3ed, leaving Armstrong to carry out his bat for 110: he took three hours and three-quarters to make his runs and, seeing that he was missed four times—his last escape was from Sharp at long-on when 92—owed a great deal to fortune. When the combined team had lost two wickets for 15 runs in 25 minutes, stumps were drawn owing to bad light. Score and analysis :— A u s t r a l ia n s . W.W. Rain limited play on Thursday to 95 minutes, during which the visitors made 109 for two wickets. They lost Salter at 6 and Hurst at 26, both caught at the wicket, but Evans and Hooman added 83 without being separated, playing out time. On Friday Hooman fell to K illick’s first ball and Sale, after scoring a couple, was caught at the wicket. Evans batted altogether for a couple of hours for 52, in which were seven 4’s : it was a good display and secured him his Blue. Le Conteur also was seen to advantage, and with Lagden put on 37 for the sixth wicket and with Turner 66 for the seventh in 40 minutes. He was dismissed through his partner returning a ball which passed through the hands of the bowler (Vincett) and disturbed the wicket whilst he was backing-up. Turner made 44, but Cart wright missed him when 14. A t the end of the innings Hatfeild hit resolutely and was responsible for all 30 runs add^d for the last wicket. Killick took five wickets for 74 in the innings of 276. At the end of the day Vine and Cartwright made 24 together without being parted. Owing to an injured hand Pawson did not keep wicket, his place being taken by Hurst. On Saturday the scori was taken to 81 before a wicket fell, Cartwright then being lbw. A collapse followed his dismissal, the total being only 136 when the sixth wicket fell. Vincett, however, hit successfully and reached 50 in 20 minutes : he made a 6, a 5 and 10 4’s in his 70 and Smith helped him to put on 71 in 25 minutes. They scored 45 in three overs off Lowe and 29 in two off Turner, who relieved him. After the innings had closed for 272—only 4 behind—rain delayed play for an hour. There was some free hitting in the Uni versity’s second innings, and when stumps were drawn 183 had been made for seven wickets. Hooman and Sale added 75 in 45 minutes, the latter hitting eleven 4’s in his 52. Score and analysis:— O x f o r d U n iv e r s it y . First innings. Second innings. M. G. Played at Portsmouth on June 24, 25 and 26. Drawn. There had been much rain during Wednesday night and play was conside ably curtailed for that reason and owing to later showers on Thursday, when the game was in progress only three hours. During that time Middlesex completed an innings for 170. Tarrant was largely responsible for the total, seeing that he went in first and was last out. Newman bowled so successfully that the eighth wicket fell at 93: at one period his analysis was four overs for 17 runs and six wickets. Mignon and Hearne (J. T.) improved the Middlesex outlook, but each was missed. Tarrant hit a 6 and eight 4’s in his 89 and offered no chance. Fry was expected to play for Hampshire, but he failed to put in an appearance and late in the afternoon Sprott substi tuted Campbell for him. No satisfactory reason was given for his absence. When Hampshire had scored one run without loss in 10 minutes on Friday, rain came down and prevented further play until two o’clock. Then three disasters occurred in quick succession, Bowell, Mead and White all being out for 16. Llewellyn and W. H. B. Evans, who ought to have been out at 18, put on 51 in half-an-hour. Half the side were out for 67, and, with only Brown of the others reaching double figures, the innings closed for 115. '1arrant’s seven wickets cost 61 runs. In the last few minutes of the day Middlesex made 9 without loss, Warner and Tarrant in. On Saturday the pair were together until their stand had realised 71 in 65 minutes. Tarrant was then caught at cover- point. His innings of 44 was a somewhat curious one, seeing that he batted 40 minutes for 18, and then doubled his score by making two 6’s, a 4 and a 2 off an over from Newman. Warner was second out, at 87, and Hendren and Murrell, after reaching double figures, were out to consecutive balls. Trott afterwards hit very successfully for 77, and enabled Middlesex to declare with seven wickets down for 232, leaving Hampshire 288 to get in 130minutes. Just before they could start their innings there was a heavy shower, but for which it is likely they might have experienced difficulty in saving the game. As it was, they made 124 for the loss of half their wickets. Score and analysis :— M id d l e s e x . First innings. P. F. Warner, c Newman, b Mead .......................... 4 Tarrant, c W.
