Cricket 1909
222 CR ICK ET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 24, 1909. DERBYSHIRE v. HAMPSHIRE. Played at Blackwell on June 21, 22 and 23. Drawn. No important match had ever been played before at Blackwell, and it was unfortunate that the game should have been interfered with by rain on the first day. It was not until ten minutes to three that a start could be made, and on the soft wicket the home side lost two wickets for 15. Fortunately Morton played steadily and found useful partners in Chapman, Needham and Warren, who helped him to add 3S, 47 and 72 respectively. Morton, seventh out (at 195), batted two hours and three-quarters for his chanceless 76, which contained eight 4’s. Humphries afterwards scored 29, carrying out his bat, and, with the fall of the last wicket at 228, play ceased for the day. Rain prevented the game being resumed on Tuesday. On the third day the game was continued at half-past eleven, and the home side quickly met with two successes, Bowrell and Mead being got rid of by the time the score had reached 23. With Stone in a shower caused an adjournment, but the delay was not a long one. Everything was dwarfed by Evans’ fine innings of 80, which took an hour and 40 minutes to compile. Sprot hit two 6’s and two 4’s off an over from Morton, and Hampshire, despite their poor start, were only 16 behind on the innings. When Derbyshire went in the sccond time Newman and Brown were seen to advantage, and, although several players reached double figures, the innings closed for 167. The match was drawn. W A R W IC K S H IR E . P layed at L eicester on June 21 , 22 aDd 23 . D raw n. On a pitch affected by rain 20 wickets went down on Monday for 243 runs. Lilley went in when Warwickshire had lost three for 23 and, aided by fortune, made 63 of the 111 runs put on whilst in ; he gave three chances, the first before he had scored. Field gave him good assistance, helping to put on 53 for the last wicket in 35 minutes. Leicestershire were dismissed by Hargreaves and Santall in a couple of hours for 109, and when their last wicket fell play ceased for the day. No play was possible on Tuesday owing to rain. On Wednesday Warwickshire had made only a single when a thunderstorm burst over the ground and caused an adjournment. When play was restarted after lunch the visitors hit out, attempting to force a win, and declared with seven wickets down for 95. Thanks to King and Knight, who carried out his bat for 47, Leicestershire managed to play out time. Score and analysis:— W arwickshire . First innings. Second innings.
