This was Oxford’s last home fixture, and tho side gave a very uneven display. Altham batted for 25 minutes and was then bowled without a run, and, although Sale and Lagden put on 73 for the sixth wicket in 50 minutes, the last five went down for 16 and the total was only 213. Lagden showed by far the best form and made 55 in an hour and a- quarter : Salter was in for an hour and 40 minutes for his 58. Bowley played a capital innings of 40 for the County and found a good partner in Burns, but six wickets had fallen for 105 by the end of the day. Burns left in the first over on Friday, and the last five wickets put on only 58, leaving the home side with a lead of 50. The University, when they went in the second time, fared badly also, their first five wickets going down for 71. Fortunately for them, however, Hooman was in good foi'm, and, although he was twice missed (when 2 and 49), made some excellent strokes during the two hours and a-half he was batting for 102. He hit fourteen 4’s and put on 57 for the sixth wicket with Lagden, who was missed at mid-on before scoring, and once had his wicket hit hard by a ball from Arnold with out a bail being displaced. The County were left with 290 to win, and lost Pearson and Arnold for 31. Bowley and Burns, who was caught off a no-ball ere making a run, took the total to 79 when play ceased for the day. In all the pair added 59 for the third wicket, and were both out at 90. Cuffe and Bache did well and put on 101 together for the fifth wicket. The former batted an hour and three-quarters for his flawless 88 and hit fourteen 4’s. After his dismissal the bowlers gained the upper hand, and the University won as stated.
