Cricket 1909
J une 24, 1909. CR ICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 213 THE AUSTRAL IANS . 13 t ii M a tc h .— v . WEST OP SCOTLAND. Played at Glasgow on June 1 7, 18 and 19. Australians won by an innings and 188 runs. About 5,000 people watched the play on the opening day of this match at Hamilton Crescent The Australians entered upon the game with light hearts, and took the field without four of the men who helped to win the Test match at Lord’s earlier in the week. The home team lost Mannes without a run, but Harry, who has played for Lancashire, batted 45 minutes for 32 and in partnership with Kerr added 52 for the second wicket. Still, half the side were out for 65 when Shaw joined Tennent. Both men played a sound game and during the 70 minutes they were together added 115 for the sixth wicket. Tennent made 80 in an hour and a-quarter without giving a chance and hit a 6 (off Laver) and fourteen 4’s. Shaw was steadier and was in for nearly two hours for 47. Downs hit freely, scoring his 28 out of 36 in half-an-hour, and the innings realised 244. O’Connor, in addition to taking six wickets for ] 10 runs on an easy-paced pitch, made a good catch at mid-on with the right hand. The Australians had 70 minutes’ batting at the end of the day and in that time made 102 for two wickets. Laver and Hartigan scored 5G for the first wicket in 35 minutes and when play ceased the former carried out his bat for 61. Over 6,000 persons were present on Tuesday, and they had the pleasure of witnessing some fine batting. There had been some rain during the night, and although the wicket was soft for a time it was never difficult. Hartigan and O’Connor remained in partnership until the third wicket had added 101 in 70 minutes. The former, fourth out, made 115 out of 201 in two hours and a-quarter with out a chance: ho made some capital on-drivcs and square-leg hits, hit eighteen 4’s, and was at last caught at the wicket. Gregory and Noble put on 31 and both left at the same total, whilst when Hopkins was sent back seven wickets were down for 246. To this point the home team had done very well, but a great change came over the game, Ransford and Macartney adding 98 for the eighth wicket in three-quarters of an hour, the latter and Bardsley 143 for the ninth in 65 minutes, and Armstrong and Bardsley 89 for the tenth in 50. Macartney, missed by Harry when 93, made 124 out of 256 in 125 minutes, and hit a 6 and fourteen 4’s in his bright display, whilst Bardsley scored 108 out of 232 in 130 minutes : he hit nineteen 4’sand gave no chance. The total reached 576, made in five hours 40 minutes, and the home side followed-on ‘332 behind In the last few minutes of the day J. Reid-Kerr and Shaw made 10 without being parted. On Saturday the former was unable to be present, and Cullen was allowed to bat in his stead f With the exception of Kerr and Mannes, who batted really well, no one made much resistance to the bowling and the Aus tralians were left with an easy win. Armstrong took six wickets for 73 runs. Score and analysis :— W est o f S c o t la n d . First innings. Second innings. J. THE TONBRIDGE WEEK. Lancashire won by 312 runs. The visitors had decidedly the best of the play on the opening day, scoring 310 in four hours and a- half and getting two Kent wickets down for 13. Hartley and Makepeace made 46 for the first wicket in 50 minutes, but the former, when 1, was missed by Woolley at slip off Fielder, who bowled Make peace with a no-ball when that player had scored 9. Tyldesley (J. T.) and Hartley put on 80 for the second wicket in 65 minutes and the latter and Sharp 58 for the third. Tyldesley (J. T.) played the best innings of the day, but Sharp, who hit ten 4’s during the 90 minutes he was in, was lucky. Hartley, when 52, was given out, caught in the slips by Hutchings, and was on his way to the pavilion when the fieldsman explained that no catch had been made. He continued his innings, and made 69 out of 184 in two hours and three-quarters. Macleod and Hornby made a few good hits, and the total reached 310. In a bad light at the end of the day Kent lost Dillon and Seymour, both bowled by Brearley, for 13. There was some rain during the night and for some time on the following morning the pitch was rather queer. Hutchings was out for 4 and, with Woolley out to the second ball he received, four wickets were down for 18, all taken by Brearley for 7 runs. Day made a useful 18, hitting three 4’s off the fast bowler, but half the side were out for 41, and, with Humphreys caught at mid-off, six wickets were down for 44. Fairservice rendered good service by scoring 19 and Huish stayed with Hardinge whilst 41 were added in 20 minutes. The last-named hit freely for 38, which included six 4’s. Brearley, in the innings of 123, took six wickets for 49, bowling admirably throughout. Contrary to general opinion, Lancashire decided to go in again in preference to making Kent follow-on. Hartley and Makepeace opened the innings and in 105 minutes scored 99, of which number the latter was responsible for 72—a good innings, though marred by a chance to the wicket-keeper at 8. Hartley played a very unenterprising game. During the first 70 minutes he was in he pottered about for 10 singles, and at the end of two and a-quarter hours’ ‘ batting ’ had made 25, in which were 19 singles. He was missed when 46, and survived to score 72 out of 252 in 200 minutes. Macleod’s brilliant hitting compensated to a certain extent for such lifeless cricket. In the course of 50 minutes he scored 62 out of 96, hitting a 6 and eleven 4’s : he punished Blythe for 41 in three overs, by means of a 6, eight 4’s, a 2and a single. With 252 scored for five wickets, the innings was closed, leaving Kent 440 to win. By the time stumps were drawn Seymour and Hardinge had been dismissed for 18. On the third morning Hutchings and Dillon added 43 for the third wicket, but Woolley was out second ball and, when Hutchings was out to a fine catch in the long-field, after batting an hour for 39, half the side were out for 80. Day and Humphreys put on 25 together, and just afterwards Worsley, whilst keeping wicket, dislocated the forefinger of his riefht hand, and retired from the game : his position was filled by Hornby. The last four men did little and Lancashire won very easily by 312 runs. Brearley was again in excellent form, his record for the match being twelve wickets for 117 runs.
