Cricket 1909

172 CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. J une 3, 1909. MIDDLESEX v. KENT. J. e . w e s t ’ s b e n e f it . Played at Lord’s on May 31, June 1 and 2. Drawn. Fine weather favoured the start of this match, and the 10,000 people present saw some excellent play. During the day twenty wickets went down for 385 runs, the visitors being left with a lead of 60 on the innings. Mason played his first match of the year for Kent, but Fielder was away owing to knee trouble. Hearne (J. T.) reappeared for Middlesex and bowled well. Kent opened in very bright fashion, Dillon and Humphreys making 69 for the first wicket in 50 minutes and Seymour and Hutch ings adding 85 for the third in 65. The fourth wicket fell at 168, but the innings closed for 227, despite an eighth wicket stand of 26 by Day and Fairservice. After lunch Hunt bowled very suc cessfully, it being due largely to him that Kent lost eight wickets for 70 runs after the interval in 80 minutes. Middlesex made only a very fair start, the first wicket realising 23 runs and the second 39. Tarrant, playing brighter cricket than usual, made 36 out of 96 in 70 minutes, whilst Payne hit freely a.s usual. Blythe afterwards bowled so successfully that the total was only 158 when the last wicket fell. ■When the innings closed play ceased for the day. On Tuesday the visitors gave a very bright display. After Dillon had played-on at 29, Humphreys and Seymour made runs freely, especially the former, who punished Trott severely and made 51 out of 94 in 70 minutes. Continuing to score quickly, he had the satisfaction of making 100 before lunch, but soon after the interval he was caught at the wicket for 105 made out of 174 in a little over two hours. His flawless innings contained thirteen 4’s, and was marked by excellent cutting and driving. The second wicket had added 145. Hutchings made his first 25 runs in 10 minutes and with Seymour put on 74 for the third partnership. The latter was then caught at cover for 88 made out of 219 in 145minutes. Hutchings, fourth out (at 267), scored 51 by powerful drives and good strokes to leg. Day made only 8, but Woolley and Mason contributed useful scores. After the fall of the eighth wicket Fairservice and Huish hit well, and were still together when the innings was declared with the score 393, leaving Middlesex 463 to win. It will be seen that of the eight Kent wickets which fell Murrell claimed as many as five. In a poor light at the end of the day Middlesex made 31 in 25 minutes for the loss of Tarrant and Payne. Yesterday, owing to heavy rain during the night and morning, not a ball could be bowled. Score and analysis :— K ent . First innings. E. W. Johnson and Bisgood made their first appearance of the season for Somerset, and Rowlands played his first match for the visitors for six years. Johnson played a stylish innings and hit five 4’s in making 50 out of 87 in 70 minutes, but the total was only 140 when the sixth wicket fell. Robson hit freely and well and Poyntz helped him to add 80 in 40 minutes. Robson made his 103 out of 139 in 85 minutes, hitting a 6 and fifteen 4’s. Only one chance —to Dennett off his own bowling when 42—marred the innings. After his dismissal the last wicket put on 51 in half an hour, the total reaching 277. The visitors fared very badly at the end of the day, losing four wickets for 21 and having six down for 82 when play ceased. Board played steadily and carried out his bat for 31. On the next day the visitors just managed to save the follow-on. Board took his score to 39, for which he batted two hours and a-quarter without a mistake. Lewis, who takes his benefit this year, obtained seven wickets for 40. Going in a second time, Johnson and Braund made 62 without loss for Somerset before lunch, the half century being reached in half-an-hour. There was no further play during the day owing to rain. On the last day Robson and Lewis scored at a r *re rate, the former making 50 in 25 minutes and the latter in 40. Together they put on 189 without being parted in 75 minutes, the innings then being declared closed, leaving the visitors 401 to win. A t one time during the partnership of Dennett and Board, which realised 65 in an hour and a-half, it seemed as though a draw might result, but Somerset pulled off the game with a good deal to spare. Robson, in addition to making 188 for once out, took half a-dozen wickets. Score and analysis :— S omerset . First innings. Second innings. WORCESTERSHIRE v. WARWICKSHIRE. Played at Worcester on May 31, June 1 and 2- Drawn. Although Kinneir and Charlesworth made 67 for Warwickshire’s first wicket in 50 minutes, the side would have fared badly but for Quaife's steady and valuable innings of 83. Stephens, Lilley and Glover were all out at 145, but Santall remained whilst 90 were put on for the eighth wicket in an hour and a- half. Quaife made his 83 out of 204 in 200 minutes, giving no chance and hitting eight 4’s. In the last half hour of the day the home side made 34 without loss. On Tuesday Bowley reached 50 in 80 minutes, and it was not until the score was 111 that a separation was effected by Pearson being caught. H. K. Foster and Burns did not do much, but Bowley remained until he had made 101 in two hours and a-half : he hit a dozen 4’s and gave no chance. Arnold batted well for a couple of hours, and M. K. Foster and Simpson-Hayward scored freely. The sixth wicket put on 64 in 45 minutes, and the seventh 61 in 38. Burrows made some good hits, but the last few men did little against Quaife’s leg- breaks. Before play ended Warwickshire made 41 in their second innings for the loss of Charlesworth and Baker. Yesterday Kinneir and Quaife, the not outs, placed their side safe from defeat, the latter again missing the century by a few runs. The play was not bright, but it succeeded so well in its purpose that the innings was closed with four wickets in hand. The home side found no difficulty in playing out time.
