Cricket 1909
CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. M ay 27, 1909. SOMERSET v. LANCASHIRE. Played at Bath on May 20, 21 and 22. Lancashire won by 9 runs. Lancashire lost Hornby to the first ball of the match and, as the result of an hour and a half’s play, half the side were out for 81. Then Macleod went in and played a remarkable innings. He reached 50 in 37 minutes and 100 in 65, and, altogether, scored 128 out of 189 in 95 minutes, hitting eight 6 ’s, eleven 4's, three 3’s and six 2’s. His on-driving and leg- hitting were superb : he made 20 runs (a 6 , three 4’s and a 2) off an over from Braund and hit two 6 ’s off consecutive balls from Greswell. He reached 103 out of 142 in 65 minutes and made a square- leg hit off Braund of 180 yards. His stand with Makepeace for the sixth wicket realised 185 in an hour and a-half. Although hitting so freely, Macleod offered only two chances—to Daniell at long-leg when 77 and to Hardy at long-off when 127. In reply to the total of 314, Somerset made 66 for the loss of Braund by the tim e stumps were drawn. The second day’s play was noteworthy for a splendid innings on the part of Daniell, who batted just under three hours for 121 and carried out his bat. He hit well all round the wicket and made two 6 ’s and twelve 4’s. When 36 he was missed at point by Hornby, but that was his only mistake. With Robson he put on 48 in 35 minutes, with Greswell 74 in 45, and with North 56 in half-an-hour. It si worthy of note that Brearley bowled unchanged throughout the long innings. When seven wickets had {alien Worsley was struck in the eye by a ball bowled by Dean and was obliged to retire, his place being taken by Hornby. In the second innings of Lancashire Hartley and Makepeace made 65 for the first wicket, but such a collapse followed that by the end of the day five men were out for 111 (Macleod 21 not out). On the third morning Macleod, who hit two 6 ’s and six 4’s in making 48 in 55 minutes, wa.s sixth out (at 151).. Hornby batted an hour and 20 minutes for 54, and Somerset wTere set 210 to win. Braund was bowled by Brearley’s first ball, whilst Spring left at 27 and Poyntz at 43. Hardy and Daniell made a good stand, putting on 90 together for the fourth wicket, but both were out by the time 134 had been scored. The tail proved unequal to pulling off the match, and Lancashire, thanks to Brearley and Huddleston, won a close game by 9 runs. Score and analysis :— L an cash ire . First innings. Second innings. The home side were not at full strength, neither Kingston nor Thompson, who was playing at Lord’s against the Australians, being present. Yorkshire were captained by Hirst, there not being an amateur on the side. Northants showed poor form, losing their fifth wicket at 49 and their ninth at 94. Knight and Buswell added 44 in 35 minutes, and the total reached 138. Knight batted an hour and three-quarters for 43, but Buswell hit freely. Yorkshire lost Rhodes and Wilson for 40, but Rothery and Denton added 81 together, and at the end of the day the visitors, with seven wickets in hand, were 5 runs on. Denton batted 80 minutes without a mistake, but Rothery, who carried out his bat for 43, was badly missed when 20. On Friday although Rothery and Hirst put on 93 together in 75 minutes, Yorkshire claimed a lead of only 115 on the innings, the last five wickets falling for 25 runs in 50 minutes. East did very well indeed to take five wickets for 66 runs in a total of 253. When the home side went in the*second time Vials and Knight were both out at 10 , and half the wickets were down for 69. Smith, however, prevented a collapse, and Wells helped him to add 49 in 35 minutes and East 56 in 80 without being separated. At the end of the day seven wickets were down for 193 (Smith 63 not out). On the third morning the last three wickets added 34, East remaining with Smith whilst 65 were added in 95 minutes. The last-named carried out his bat for an excellent 85, which lasted three hours and a- quarter and contained ten 4’s. Set 113 to win, Yorkshire made the runs for the loss of Wilson and Denton, both of whom left at 32. Rhodes hit five 4’s and batted 130 minutes for 55 not out.
