Cricket 1909
M ay 27, 1909. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 149 WARWICKSHIRE v. SURREY. Played at Edgbaston on May 20, 21 and 22. TWO SEPARATE 100’s BY HOBBS. Drawn. Neither side was at full strength, Surrey being without Hayward, whose knee was still troubling him, and Warwickshire lacking the services of Lilley, who had injured his hand. For their score of 343 the visitors were indebted chiefly to Hobbs and Leveson-Gower who made 218 of the number between them, and added 99 together for the seventh wicket in 80 minutes. Hobbs, hitting a 6 (off Santall) and seventeen 4’s, batted four hours and a-quarter for 1(50 and was seventh out (at 294). He reached 50 out of 94 in an hour and a-quarter and completed his 100 in 175 minutes. When 118 he offered a hard chance to Charlesworth off his own bowling, but made no other mistake. Levescn- Gower batted two hours for 58 and hit six 4’s. Warwickshire scored 18 without loss at the end of the day. When the game was resumed on the following day Davis kept wicket instead of Strud wick, who had injured his hand. The chief features of tho Warwickshire batting were the innings of Kinneir and Quaife, each of whom made 61. The former, who was missed at the wicket when 30, batted two hours and five minutes and hit eight 4’s, whilst the latter batted in characteristic style for 190 minutes and hit five 4’s. Together they put on 49 for the third wicket, but the longest stand of the innings was by Q,uaife and Glover, who added 73 for the sixth in an hour and a-quarter. Surrey led by 102 on the innings, and, after losing two wickets for 13 when they went in the second time, took the total to 79 without further loss by the time play ceased, Hobbs being 42 not out and Altham 28. On Saturday the latter was at once disposed of, but Crawford gave useful assistance to Hobbs, who made a hundred for the second time in the match : he scored 100 out of 182 in 125 minutes, making eleven 4’s and hitting well all round the wicket. As in his first innings, he reached three figures without making a mistake. The tail collapsed, but Warwickshire were set 300 to win in four hours. Smith and Kinneir made 09 for the first wicket, and the latter and Charlesworth 71 for the third. Kinneir played a sound but slow game, and a draw was always certain. Score and analysis:— S u rrey . KENT. Played at Chesterfield on May 20 and 21. Kent won by an innings and 141 runs. By bright and attractive cricket Kent ran up 357 on the first day, nine players reaching double figures. The first wicket produced 88 in an hour and a quarter, and Dillon, second out, hit eleven 4’s in making 69 out of 129 in 110 minutes without a chance. Hutch ings put on 63 with Woolley and 91 in 50 minutes with Day, his 74 being made out of 154 in 110 minutes; he hit nine 4’s and fell to a smart catch at point. Blj’the, in making 22, had some luck, being missed twice, and playing a ball from Bestwick on to his wicket without removing a bail. In the last half hour’s play Derbyshire made 17 without loss. On Friday no runs were made during the first 20 minutes, and Blythe bowled nine maiden overs in succession. Chapman and Cadman put on 37 together in half-an-hour, but Cooper and Warren fell to consecutive balls from Blythe, and, although Wright made some good hits before being caught at second slip, the innings closed for 142. Owing to a twisted ankle Morton was unable to take any part in the match. Derbyshire followed-on, 215 behind, and fared even worse than in their first innings. Cadman made 24 but no one else exceeded 20 and the side were beaten by an innings and 141 runs. Score and analysis :— K ent . E. W. Played at Nottingham on May 20, 21 and 22. Notts won by seven wickets. Owing to a strain Wass did not play for the home side, but otherwise both sides were well represented. The first wicket of Notts produced 35, Iremonger batting 25 minutes ere making a run. Jones scored freely and put on 82 with George Gunn in 65 minutes : he reached 50 out of 66 in 65 minutes and, in all, made 85 out of 117 in an hour and three- quarters, giving no chance and hitting twelve 4’s. The best cricket of the day was afterwards shown by Hardstaff, who batted faultlessly for 160 minutes and hit fourteen 4’s: he put on 63 for the third wicket with George Gunn in 45 minute3 and 127 for the fifth with John Gunn in 95. Alletson, driving freely, made 53 not out at the end of the day, the Notts total when stumps were drawn being 402 for eight wickets. The last two wickets added 49, the total reaching 451. Alletson made 81 in 85 minutes and hit a 6 and nine 4’s. The first Leicestershire wicket realised 34, but three were down for 51, Riley, a left-hand medium-paced bowler, sending down 10 overs for 12 runs and three wickets. King came to the rescue, and during the two hours and a half he was in made no mistake : he hit ten 4’s in his 77, and put on 58 in an hour with Coe and 96 in 75 minutes with Crawford. The last five wickets fell for 45, and Leicestershire followed-on 201 behind. By the end of the day they had made 42 runs in their second innings for the loss of Wood, Knight, and Whitehead. On the third morning Coe and King put on 82 for the fifth wicket in 110 miiyites, and the latter and Crawford 76 for the sixth in an hour. King batted just over three hours for 50, but Crawford hit freely. Notts, set 40 to win, lost Payton and Alletson in Jayes’ first over, and Jones at 32. Score and analysis : N otts . First innings.
