Yorkshire won by an innings and 88 runs. Owing to rain no play took place in this match on Monday. On the second day everything was over shadowed by the batting of Rhodes. After the first wicket had fallen at 11, he added 79 in 40 minutes with Denton and 86 in 65 with Wilson. Hirst did practically nothing, but Rhodes scored 114 in three hours and five minutes and hit eleven 4’s. He gave no chance and was sixth out, at 241. The last four wickets added 51 and in the last 80 minutes of the day Essex scored 69 for four wickets, after losing their first three for 3. Of the 66 put on together by Fane and Gillingham the latter claimed 40. Yesterday Fane carried his bat through the innings and, failing to find anyone to stay with him, Essex were dis missed for 90 and were called upon to follow-on. Haigh took seven wickets for 32, his analysis on the third morning being four for 6. The visitors again fared badly and by lunch time had eight wickets down for 64. After the interval the innings closed for 114, leaving Yorkshire winners by the margin stated. Score and analysis:— Y o rk sh ire . Played at Leicester on May 17, 18 and 19. Kent won by an innings and 81 runs. The home side were without Crawford, who was indisposed, whilst Preston played instead of Fielder for Kent. In Jayes’ first over both Hardinge and Seymour were caught without a run made, and Dillon, when a single, should have been caught off Astill. Upon the fall of Hutchings’ wicket at 33 rain caused an interruption and no further play was possible until after the interval. Dillon, fifth out (at 163), made 84 in two hours and a-half by splendid cricket: he hit a 6 and six 4’s and found invaluable partners in Woolley and Day, the latter helping to add 71 for the fifth wicket. During the day Kent made 247 for six wickets in three hours and a-half. On the second day Humphreys and Fairservice’s partnership realised 80 in 70 minutes, and the innings closed for 334. Wood and Knight gave Leicestershire a good start, but of the others only Coe (16) reached double figures. Blythe took nine wickets for 42 runs in the innings of 104 and during the day fourteen for 56. When stumps were drawn Leicestershire had eight wickets down in their second innings for 148. On Wednesday the two outstanding wickets fell in Blythe’s first over for a single, leaving Kent successful by an innings and 81 runs. Score and analysis :— K ent . Humphreys,b King... 61 E. W. Played at Southampton on May 17,18 and 19. Hampshire won by six wickets. Somerset gave a trial to Sutton, of Bruton, and Morgan, a left-hand bowler engaged with the Lans- down Club, whilst Smith, of the Trojans, made his first appearance for Hampshire. The home side were given a fine start by Bowell and Mead, who made 156 for the first wicket in two hours and a- quartcr, but the latter was missed by Braund at slip when 38. Fry was caught at the wicket off the third ball he received. Bowell made no mistake during the three hours and a-half he was in : he hit a 5 and twenty-two 4’s in scoring 149 out of 257, and made his runs all round the wicket. Brown hit freely for 3S, included in which were nine 4’s, but the innings closed for 347. In the last few minutes of the day Somerset scored 16 for the loss of Chidgey’s wicket. On the following morning Braund was caught at the wicket at 42 and the total was only 87 when the sixth wicket fell. Daniell played a plucky game for two hours for 66 without giving a chance and put on 49 for the seventh wicket with Poyntz. Brown bowled in fine form and took five of the wickets for 47 runs. Somerset did better when they followed on, although their first three wickets fell for 61. Daniell again played a fine innings, and added 81 with Sutton and 82 with Hill. At close of play 249 had been made for six wickets, Daniell being not out 91. On the third day Daniell took his score to 103, for which he batted two hours and a-half without a chance, but after his dismissal the innings quickly closed, leaving Hampshire 101 to win —a number made for the loss of four wickets.
