Cricket 1909

M ay 20, 1909. CRICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF T h £ GAME. 1 3 9 A m a t c h , to commence on June 14th, has been arranged between Essex and Cambridge University. The game will follow immediately upon that at Cam bridge between the University and Mr. Leveson-Gower’s Eleven, and will allow the Cantabs three days’ rest before enter ing upon the first of their out matches— against Sussex at Brighton. “ E n g l is h boys, to m y mind,” writes Dr. Poidevin in The A thletic News, “ are over-coached and pay altogether too much attention to correctness of style and finish, to the detriment of their real effectiveness, for, after all, you play the game to make runs, not strokes.” RICH MOND v. Played at Lord’s on May 17 and 18. Middlesex won by one wicket. Showers and poor light prevented a start being made on Monday until 20 minutes past one. Capt. English played his first match for the visitors whilst Beresford was included in the Middlesex side for the first time. At lunch Gloucestershire had three wickets down for 48, of which no less than 20 were extras. Jessop then went in and made 69 out of 112 in 45 minutes off thirty-five balls, hitting a dozen 4’s, four 3’s and only five singles : he reached 50 in 25 minutes, but was badly missed by Murrell at cover off Mignon when 15. Board, although scoring only 10, remained whilst 72 were put on for the fourth wicket in half-an-hour. Huggins failed, but Brownlee hit freely and, with Parker and Mills making double figures, the total reached 210. M. W. Payne and Warner made 38 for the first wicket of Middlesex, but half the side were out for 74. Hunt remained whilst 26 were added and, thanks to some successful hitting by Murrell, the score was 145 for seven when stumps were drawn. There were several interruptions through rain on Tuesday, but so much progress was made with the game that a definite result was reached that evening. Murrell remained until he had made 49 out of 70 put on for the eighth wicket in 70 minutes. Dennett took five wickets for 44 runs, but Mignon and Tarrant did even better when Gloucestershire went in the second time. Murrell then kept wicket instead of Mr. M. W. Payne and dismissed three men during the innings. Half the side were out for 46 and, with the last five wickets adding only 19 Middlesex were set but 102 to win. Murrell made some good drives, but six were out for 43, all to Dennett, who had a wicket quite to his liking. At this point rain fell heavily, to the advantage of Middlesex. Still, when Tarrant was eighth out (at 64), after batting 70 minutes for 23, the position seemed to favour the visitors. But Beresford and Hendren hit well, and, after the former’s dismissal, Mignon, the l.ast man, stayed in whilst the remaining 18 were made. It was a thrilling finish. There can be little doubt, however, that but for the shower mentioned, Gloucestershire would have pulled off the match. Score and analysis:— G lou cestershire . First innings. Langdon, c M. W. OXFORD UNIVERSITY v. H. D. G. LEVESON-GOWER’S XI. Played at Oxford on May 17, 18 and 19. Oxford University won by three wickets. Some good batting was shown for the University on the first day, and a total of 347 resulted. Salter, third out, made 40 out of 62 in 45 minutes, and Hurst, who hit hard and made 68 of the number, helped Hooman to add 124 for the fourth wicket in 55 minutes. Hurst hit two 6’s and eight 4’s and Hooman ten 4’s. Lagden played the innings of the day, and carried out his bat for 77, in which were three (3’s : he hit two 6’s and two 4’s off an over from Burrough. Before t ad light stopped play the visitors lost five wickets for 25 runs. On Tuesday Smith, Wcigall and Palmer made useful scores, but the visiting side had to follow-on 220 behind. They did better in their second innings, however, for after five wickets had fallen for 100 Smith and Weigall added 64 together, and, after the fall of the seventh wicket, Weigall and Burrough put on 104 without being parted. On the third day the innings closed for 333, leaving the University 114 to win. This number, thanks to Lagden, Burrough, and Hurst was made for seven wickets, the first-named being the chief cause of his side’s success. Score and analysis:— O xford U niversity . First innings.
