Cricket 1909

M ay 13, 1909. CRICKET : A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. 117 less skilful performers are bit in all directions. One of the most important duties of a captain is to use his men to tbe best advantage of the side, but this, as tbe case of Crawford shows, Sir Arthur Hazlerigg quite fails to do. And, judging from a perusal of the averages, it is presumed that Sir Arthur is played for his captaincy. HAMPSTEAD v. BELSIZE.—Played at Hampstead on May 8 . B elsize . R. J. D. The death occurred suddenly at Barnsley on Friday last of J. W. Cooper, who was for several years a prominent member of the Barnsley Yorkshire Council cricket team. Playing for Yoikshire 2nd XI. v. Lancashire 2nd XI. at Barnsley in July. 1901, he went in last man and, in forty-eight minutes, ran up 103, his partnership with Bedford (40 not out) for the last wicket adding 135. He retired from cricket two seasons ago and was only thirty-one years of age at the time of his death. Mr. H. W hitfeld . It is with regret that wo have to chronicle the death of Mr. Herbert Whitfeld at Chailey, Sussex, during the evening of tbe 6th inst. Mr. Whitfeld was born at Lewes on Novem ber 25th, 1858, and during the later seventies a d early eighties was a promiuent figure in cricket. Scores and Biographies (xiii.—598) says of him :—“ Possesses an excellent style wiih good defence, and power of hitting, and has already (1877) made some capital scores. He is a right-handed batsman, but bowls left round-armed middle paced, and fields generally at long slip.” He was in the Eton eleven in 1875 and two following years, being captain in his last. In the matches with Harrow and Winchester he made the follow ing scores :— Year. 1875 1870 . 1877 .. Harrow. 0* 15 03* Winchester. .......................... 18 .......................... 13 a. d 1 9 '........... 05 In the six matches be also took five wickets for 73 runs. Proceeding to Cambridge, he at once gained his Blue, and playel against Oxford four times, being on the winning side on three occasions. I 11 each of the University matches he made a single-figure score in one innings and double figures in the other, and in the four games scored 122 runs with an average of 1742. Mr. Whitfeld played in 41 matches for Sussex between 1878 and 1885 and, with 80 against Yorkshire at Brighton in 1884 as his highest score, made 1,411 runs with an average of 2137. Duriog 1884 he captained the side, when Sussex won nine of their 16 engagements and drew two. In the match with Surrey at the Oval in the same year—1884, to wit— he went in first and carried his bat through the innings for 41. In 1881 he assisted the Gentlemen against the Players at Brighton in the match set apart for the benefit of James Lillywhite, jun., and made 34 not out in his first innings and 4 in bis second. There was a very close finish to the game, the Players winning by one run after there had been a tie on the first innings. Mr. Whitfeld would frequently allude to the incidents of the match when recalling events of the past within his own experience, for in many ways it was a remarkable game. Another match which furnished him with a reminiscence was that between Sussex and Surrey at the Oval in 1882. Mr. Whitfeld was not a slower scorer than the average player of his time, but in the game men tioned he made only three runs whilst his partner, Mr, W. A. Bettesworth, scored 56. At luncheon time on the last day Sussex required but six runs to win and had five wickets in hand, but, instead of playing out the match, the players adjourned for lunch. Mr. Whitfeld, whose portrait and biography were published in Cricket of May 14th, 1885, belonged to I Zingari and had been a mem ber of the M.C.C. since 1878. Last year his son, Mr. G. A. Whitfeld, appeared for the County on a few occasions with success, averaging 63 66 for three completed innings. In 1878 his brother, Mr. F. D. Whitfeld, played once for Sussex—against the Aus tralians at Brighton—but made only one run in his two completed innings. Mr. Herbert Whitfeld, in addition to playing four times at Lord’s against Oxford, represented Cambridge in the mile race in 1879 and at Association football at the Oval in 1879,1880, and 1881. In 1880, too, he and the Hon. Ivo Bligh played in the tennis doubles and won 3-0. SOUTH HAMPSTEAD v. WILLESDEN PARK.— Played at Brondesbury on May 8 . S outh H am pstead . N.
