M ay 6, 1909. CR ICKET A WEEKLY RECORD OF THE GAME. guards, to protect his shins, which had been badly hurt some time before. Many of the balls he fielded hit his shins, and the opposing players, knowing of his weakness, could not make it out until it suddenly dawned upon them that he was wearing protectors under his trousers. They immediately objected, and there was a hubbub which ended in the player removing the shin-guards, under pain of the other side refusing to go on with the match! Verity, up-country cricket in Australia is the home of the cricket miracle. ---------- F rom the Tasmanian M ail :—- They were playing cricket at Kimberley. A Tommy was batting, and a corporal acting as umpire, when there was an appeal for a clean case of leg-before. “ How’s that?” asked the bowler. “ Out,” said the corporal. “ Out?” cried Tommy; “ How out?” “ Why, leg-before,” said the corporal. Then Tommy burst into shrill ironic laughter. “ Leg- before?” he shouted. “ Why, it hit me on the blooming pad ! ” Played. Won. Lost. Dwn. Only the mornings and evenings were devoted to the game as it got very warm about noon. The first day play was started late, but the home team made up by fast scoring. The Maharaja, winning the toss, went in first with Mistri to open tho innings and made a capital start. In forty minutes they made 96 runs by first-rate cricket. The Maharaja’s fault less innings of 47 was warmly appreciated as he showed a marked improvement in his batting. The Kour Sahib’s 26, composed of three 3’s, four 4’s and a single, .attracted much notice for liis beautiful strokes to leg, while the high scores of Mistri, Gokal Chand, and Tara Chand lifted the total to 325, and Abdulghaui and Jaswant Singh succecded in carry ing the score to 403. The visitors made a bad start, losing two of their best wickets for only 1 run. Bebbert and Gray running themselves out, the whole responsibility fell to Lumsden who made a magnificent stand and played a capital innings of 67 : he received little assistance from the others, bar Cullen and Drake-Brockman, and the side were out for 155. Following-on, they could make only 120 against the accurate bowling of Gurbaklish Singh, who captured eight wickets for 31 runs. Cullen succeeded in making 40, while Lumsden, Gray and Hamilton reached double-figures. Ferozepore lost by an innings and 12S runs. The remarkable improvement in the batting and fielding of Patiala cricketers reflects great credit on F. A Tarrant for his excellent coaching during the last winter.
