Middlesex, at Taunton, August 5 , 6, and 7 . —On the first day Middlesex scored 552 in two hundred and seventyminutes, play ending when the innings closed. P. P. Warner made 77 out of 110 in fifty minutes, hitting seventeen 4 ’ s, eleven of which were successive scoring hits off Braund (L. C.) in five overs. J. Douglas ( 180 ) and Tarrant, F. A. ( 147 ) put on 155 for the third wicket in an hour. In the first innings of Somerset P. R. Johnson ( 54 ) made 50 out of 71 in seventy- five minutes. Gentlemen of Ireland v. South Africans, at Dublin, August 5 , 6, and 7 *—In the first inning3 of the former J. J. Kotze, in trying to catch T. C. Ross at mid-on, was struck so severely by the ball on the left eye that he was obliged to be taken to the hospital. Gloucestershire v. Essex, at Bristol, August 5 , 6, and 7 . —In the second innings of Glouces­ tershire G. L. Jessop( 85 ) and Langdon, T. ( 57 ) added 141 for the second wicket in 55 minutes, 48 at one period being scored in a-quarter of an hour. In the second innings of Essex the Rev. F. if. Gillingham ( 19 ) batted an hour for his last two runs. Warwickshire v. Worcestershire, at Edg- baston, August 5 , 6, and 7 .—In the second innings of the latter II. E. Foster scored 76 out of 113 in an hour. Kent v. Lancashire, at Canterbury, August 8, 9 , and 10 .—In the first innings of Kent K. L. Hutchings scored 108 out of 143 in one hundred and five minutes, reaching 53 out ol 70 in fifty. In the second innings of Lan­ cashire R. H. Spooner ( 134 ) made his first 50 runs out of 71 in fifty minutes. Surrey v. Middlesex, at the Oval, August 8, 9 , and 10 .—On the first day of the match P. F. Warner ( 149 ) made 115 before lunch, reaching 50 out of 65 in forty minutes. In the first innings of Surrey Hayes, E. G. ( 202 ) and Lord Dalmeny ( 50 ) added 84 for the fifth wicket in twenty-seven minutes, and in the second of Middlesex M. \V. Payne scored 66 out of 94 in an hour. Gloucestershire v. Mason (119 not out) added 230 for the fifth Kent wicket in one hundred minutes, making the last 87 in half-an-hour and the last i/8 in sixty-five minutes. Off the last over (from Lewis, A. E.) he received, Seymour hit five 4 ’ s and was caught at th'rd man. In the second innings of Somerset the last six wickets fell for 11 runs. England v. South Africa, at the Oval, August 19 , 20 , and. 21 .—C. B. Fry ( 129 ) made 40 singles in his overnight score of 108 . Yorkshire (62 and 91 ) v. Worcestershire (155 and 28 ), at Bradford, August 19 , 20 , and 21 .—Yorkshire lost by 30 runs, although they dismissed Worcestershire (one man absent) for 28 . In the first innings of the visitors the last five wicke's fell for 8 runs. Four of tho last five wickets in the first innings of York­ shire were caught at slip by W. B. Burns, who made eight catches there in the match. Gloucestershire v. Surrey, at Bristol, August 19 , 20 , and 21 .—Playing for the former, F. H. B. Champain ( 149 ) made 20 runs (five 4 ’s) off an over from Lees (W. S.). When the ninth wicket fell in Surrey’s second innings the stumps were drawn, it being thought that P. R. May was not going in, as he did not do so immediately. The umpires and players entered the pavilion, and then it was found that May was ready. The two minutes not having elapsed, stumps were reset and May scored 11. Kent v. Yorkshire, at Canterbury, August 22 , 23 , and 24 .—In the second innings of Yorkshire Hirst (G. H.) (91 not out) made 50 out of 66 in eighty minutes, and in the second of Kent Newstead (J. T.) bowled seventeen over (fourteen maidens) for 3 runs and two wickets. Worcestershire v. Surrey, at Worcester, August 22 , 23 , and 21 .—H. G. Bache, a student of King Edward’s School, Birming­ ham, who was played for Worcestershire, was only 16 years of age. Middlesex v. Kent, at Lord’s, August 26 , 27 , and 28 .—Seymour (Jas.) batted twenty- five minutes for Kent eie making a run. fcussex v.
